Hi, I have a friend living in Spain who wants to buy a holiday home in Ireland, he plans on spending a couple of months a year here.

He plans on buying a cheap car to keep here but can't get a decent quote here even from Liberty insurance when his Spanish insurance is with Liberty as well!

    Any ideas or work arounds?

    Thanks

There's no such thing as short term insurance in Ireland. The only options are to take a policy and suspend/cancel it when you don't need it.

The cost of keeping a car here, taxing it, insurance and maintenance will be considerably more than hiring one.

The cheap car here will have depreciation, rust, NCT, and battery may be flat each time he needs it. You can tax for 3 months minimum and then declare off the road.

For insurance only option is 1 year policy and then cancel policy after a few months. Quote will be crazy, non Irish licence, no no claims bonus, and he won't earn any if he never keeps policy for a year, so price will be high each and every year.

He might be better getting an out of city long term car hire. This might be expensive at peak summer times. There are similar to car hire such as gocar for short term day or week hire, or randomer car hire with insurance such as joinfleet app where you borrow someone else's car, and insurance is included in the cost. The random person may not want to lian car for months, and total cost may be high.

I wonder could they do something with their Spanish insurance to transfer to Irish car, or just use it to get cost of hire car down by having your own insurance for hire car. Either way the cost of running a car in Ireland is high.

If he got the likes of a 1.0L Yaris, for say 500 euro, he may get a quote for 2000 for year one, 1000 for year 2 and say 800 year 3. The car would probably need to be stored indoors with wheels off ground on axle stands with battery disconnected and on a trickle charge, in order to have any chance of starting next visit. Brakes may sieze go may need some messing to get road worthy each time. If over 4 years old, NCT becomes an issue, you would need NCT booked for while in country and insured.

    No easy fix.
