Passed a speed van yesterday. I was driving towards it and was wondering if they can “catch” bikers as they normally take photo of front car reg which bike obviously does not have.

I was genuinely not speeding btw.

AFAIK they have a camera that can get you from the other side of the van as well.

My step-father got a ticket from one of the Go Safe vans about 2 or 3 years ago near Lucan while he was on his Fazer.

heard lads say they can detect from front and rear but don’t think that is true.

They only have camera set up at rear of van so can detect oncoming cars or cars/bikes travelling away from van but would not detect bike travelling towards it as no reg number showing….

The camera is manually operated (i.e. operated by an individual)

The camera looks out the back window only.

Edit: It can only see out the back window but it can catch you if you are approaching or moving away from the camera.

Manually operated?! I would have thought that they just pull up and leave it there, second vehicle, and pick it up at the end of the day.

Well, the pic he got in the post was him moving away from the van so assumed they got him after he went past. He admitted to not noticing the van anyway so was never sure whether it was the front or back. He was doing close to 70 in a 60 zone from memory. Was an awful lot more careful after. He's given up biking since anyway so it doesn't bother him any more. :)

Only a camera in back window which can do you. Person stays in van just to make sure everything is working but doesn't actually do anything. Also if caught on a motorway with a go safe van parked in a garda only spot you should fight it and it will be thrown out

Some are being thrown out also due to not providing the +/- tolerance etc. information in court.

I had one thrown out because the van decided to be in a place where it was not allowed to be.

When I went to court I was told the employee (Van driver/Camera operator) was fired.

Just read an article about speed vans. It said that vans can now detect vehicles travelling in both directions. My understanding from reading is that it's the camera in the rear can read cars coming to and moving away from it. Plus would catch a rear reg I suppose?

Was always of the belief it was only the rear and would have been caught a few times if it had been both. So must be a recent upgrade.

Could well be right. Until know I thought they detected 1 way so hardly the best source of info. 😉
