Does anyone know why ballythem is cheaper than xtratherm where they seem to be a very similar product i.e. are there any well known reasons xtratherm is considered better?

Ask for a 'Data Sheet' or spec sheet for both products. It's possible that the xtratherm will have a 0.20 insulation rating while the Ballytherm might have 0.22. That's a slight improvement (lower is better) on thermal performance. It will be a very small difference like that. Depending on the size, layout, shape of the house, etc it could be an extra €5 saving per year in heating or €50. After 15 years it may or may not have paid back itself the difference. Two many variables to calculate over the internet without more info.
