Tiling outdoors onto marine ply

I want to tile vertically onto a sheet of marine ply which is mounted in an outdoor setting. I have exterior tile cement, but is there anything I need to do to prepare the ply so that the tile cement will key to it properly?

I'd personally replace the ply for tile backer board .
Or else just clad the ply in tile backer board.
Then tile
