Was out with people earlier and got into a coughing fit. I said "something went against my breath" and nobody had ever heard that phrase before. What do you call it when something goes down the wrong way and makes you cough?

Down the wrong way or with your breath.

Yeah, I'd use that phrase myself. Happens to me in the office now and again. Last time it was going on for about two minutes until someone could be heard muttering, "FFS, will you ever shut up?". P*ssing yourself laughing during a coughing fit isn't fun either.

Ye I've heard it before. If you're ever holding a baby and go outside and it's a bit windy, it can go against their breath and they get a little fright.

Something going against your breath is not the same as something going down the wrong way! They're completely different things.

You can actually grow plants and things in your lungs because something went down the wrong way.

I always heard it growing up in the South East. Maybe a Leinster thing
