Huawei P30 Pro - what's next?

I've had a P30 Pro for about 18 months and it's been faultless - the best mobile I've used by far. I'm out of contract shortly with Eir so I could go again (although a 2 year contract is too long imho) or go sim only.

Android suits me and I wouldn't go to an iphone.

Any suggestions? Budget is ok but not bottomless.

Is the Mi11 a step up from the P30 Pro?

i was in the same situation a few months ago , nearly got the Mi11 but went with the samsung s21 ultra , great phone if not a bit bit for my small hands but , i needed 5g (not really) and a super bright screen and im not disappointed , cameras really good , bit better than the p30 pro , but if im honest only for the the boycott on huawei , i would have went for the p40 pro but im sorted not for at least 3 years hopefully.

Definitely a step up, larger screen and brighter than the P30 pro, runs on the Snapdragon 888 chipset which is flagship, 5g enabled, it has120hz refresh rate, bigger battery. I find it faster overall. I was torn to let the P30 pro go and held on to it for a few weeks before I moved over to Xiaomi.

Same situation as you OP, Have the P30 Pro and its far and away best handset ive had

Contract was up last month (was paying 50/month on eir), absolutely nothing took my eye

Moved onto a sim only monthly contract, again with eir, 9.99 for all calls/texts/data

If something catches my eye i can cancel immediately, until then i'll keep on using the p30 pro

SIM only route looks attractive. €15 p/m for an unlimited 5g plan. Handset wise a Xiaomi Poco F3 looks like a bit of a flagship killer. €330 odd on Amazon.de for the better 256g version.

my contract was up a month ago...was paying 60 a month inc cost of phone....now on a 14.99 sim only .....this phone has served me well (p30 pro)....i had an issue when new of that brownish greenish tint on photos which improved with updates and i dont notice that any more.

i did miss headphone jack at start but no bother with bluetooth ones on walks now.

it could be a bit brighter in daylight but i have one of those whitestone dome screen protectors so dunno if that effects how it is in daylight.

apart from that it does all i want...inc superb battery...so nothing i could point to at moment that can offer me what this doesnt give me.

very glad to be finished with contract...i'll never go back into one

Very similar to me. Got the p30 on release day, cost me €220 and got a free sonos speaker. Was paying €40 a month. Went to upgrade but nothing reasonable. I think upgrading is dead, the only the only decent phone at a reasonable price was a p30 pro at around €250. So, much the same phone for more than it was 2 years ago. Crazy.

Decided to keep the p30 and pay €11 a month instead on 48. No way is a new galaxy 21 worth it at €40 a month for at least 18 months and a €400 payment. The difference is just nowhere near worth the money imho. Would buy a decent laptop for that price.

I think you're right about upgrading being dead. I've been on bill pay with three since around 2013 and have probably upgraded every two years, have had iPhones and Samsungs in that time but got the P30 pro about 18 months ago and it's a super phone.

Have had my eye on other phones just to see what's out there for when it comes to time for an upgrade, but as you said, I don't think there is any phone out there that is enough of a step up.

P30 pro has a great camera, great battery, still remains quick, memory nowhere near full. Hard to see what a new phone could do better really. Maybe phones are plateuing, only so much one can do. These new flip and fold phones seem like they are just running out of ideas.

Combination of very cheap PAYG deals, flagship phones becoming expensive and technology moving beyond what most people need.

New good features are rare. On screen finger print scanner was the last decent one. The p30 has infrared which is really handy imho.

In January I was due an upgrade an searched here for that word, it's mad, even the word "upgrade" is rarely used here compared with 5 years ago.

Still have my P30 Pro, put a Clear Mobile sim into it, upgraded to an S21 Ultra several months ago, couldn't be happier, what did you buy eventually?

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 17,852 Mod ✭✭✭✭Henry Ford III

A Xiaomi Poco F3. It's excellent so far.

Are either of those much better than a p30 Pro, on paper they don't seem a worthwhile step up?

Do a comparison on GSM Arena. I think there are fairly significant differences tbh.

I'm thinking of changing my P30 Pro for an S21. Main requirement is Qi enabled and good battery life.

Was very happy with the P30 Pro until about two days ago when the battery decided it would die in under 24 hours on a full charge and barely any use. I've had the phone since March 2019.

I am in contract with Eir until February but due to them upping the contract price, I can cancel the contract between now and the 16th November.

Your battery drain could also be caused by a rouge app.

If it was me, I'd try a factory reset first before giving up and buying something else.

After the reset, use your phone for a couple of days with no additional apps installed, and see how that goes.

That's if you're otherwise still happy with the P30.

Don't forget to backup all your valuable data before doing a factory reset

e.g. photos, SMS/call history, WhatsApp , password manager data file etc.

You never know, perhaps that might sort your issue.

How does the Camera compare on the Xiaomi vs the p30 pro

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,142 ✭✭✭GIMP

Personally I think the P30 camera is better especially for zoomed in pictures, but the Mi11 is still very accurate and acceptable.
