Newbie Question - Maximum Aperture

    Probably a stupid question but here goes. Just getting into digital SLR photography and have bought an 18 - 200mm lens. But what does a maximum aperture of f/3.5 - 5.6. mean? There are occasions when I can't get the f stop below f5.6, on aperture priority.

    That said the camera is probably smarter than me!!
