Newbie Question - Maximum Aperture

Probably a stupid question but here goes. Just getting into digital SLR photography and have bought an 18 - 200mm lens. But what does a maximum aperture of f/3.5 - 5.6. mean? There are occasions when I can't get the f stop below f5.6, on aperture priority. That said the camera is probably smarter than me!! Thanks MAV

3.5 to 5.6 is the maximum aperture range, the maximum aperture on your lens changes depending on the focal length. So at 18mm you will have a max aperture of F3.5, as you zoom in and get closer to 200mm it will change to F5.6.
