If a child is on free shool travel but couldn't get the bus as there wasn't space during covid does anyone know how to apply for the grant for private travel.

Norma Foley announced it last year but I can't find how to apply. Thanks

I was not in the same situation as you but made the decision when our child went back to school in March to transport them ourselves to cut down on contact numbers.

At the end of the school year I enquired about the grant due to Covid, The school thought I should be entitled to it but when I got in touch with the department I was not, apparently they had to be informed in September of 2020 whether or not we were using School transport.

Your situation is different to mine, I'd suggest getting in touch with the school d they should be able to tell you who to contact in the Department of Education.

If you are entitled to the grant you will have to have contact with the school anyways as you will have to get a from signed by then confirming the amount of days your child was in school anyways.

For what it's worth this was the reply I got

"In August 2020, due to the 50% capacity guidelines that were issued from NPHET with regard to post primary school transport services, the Department issued communications which was made available at gov. ie and circulated via an email from Bus Éireann to families with existing school transport accounts, advising that that it was understood that for some parents and children this latest updated advice may have meant that some parents would not wish for their children to use post-primary school transport and may have wished to bring their own child or children to school for the 2020/2021 school year.

It was requested that if families chose not to use school transport that they inform the Department by emailing schooltransportrefunds2020@education.gov.ie by Friday 4th September 2020 and on receipt of this email a refund on the cost of the school bus ticket would be arranged.  A grant would be provided to support the cost of transport arrangements for those families who are eligible for transport under the terms of the school transport scheme and whose parents had decided not to use transport for the 2020/2021 school year and had advised the Department as outlined above."

    Best of Luck.
