Garage as a separate building from house

A lot of Irish houses seem to have a garage as a separate building, as compared to say in the US, where it's often attached to the side of the house. Any particular reason for this? I was thinking that maybe it's cheaper, in that you don't have to build to the same standard/insulation as the house.
