Sixth class students at a school in Galway have been asked not to come to school after it emerged they had been in contact with someone who was infected with Covid-19.

It's understood the students in the class received a talk from the person, who has since been diagnosed as infected with Covid-19, and as a precaution, the HSE and the school have asked the students and teachers in the class to remain away from the school.

The HSE has advised some pupils in a county Galway national school to stay at home after it emerged they had been in contact with a confirmed case of a person with the coronavirus.
Craughwell National School were directed by the HSE in a letter yesterday to advise 6th class pupils, their class teacher and a Special Needs Assistant that they were not permitted to attend school today.

What’s the point of this thread?

It’s just going to become another breeding ground for rumour and hysteria. It’s already off to a good start with a joe.ie article being posted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

If this thread helps some local people from catching the virus by using preventative methods then it's worth it.
It's also for information that some schools/businesses may close temporarily.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,675 ✭✭✭ronnie3585

How will posting rumours and joe.ie articles prevent people from getting Covid-19?

yeah this is all well and good, but this virus will thrive due to the lack of personal awareness or respect towards others when it comes to the dumbest and mankiest amongst us, how many children asked to stay at home from school will actually stay at home and not be running around town with their mates

Hopefully the parents will manage to keep them somewhat isolated. And with computers etc these days I'm sure the kids won't mind staying home.

Sounds like there’s a lot of scaremongering on this thread mainly by a long established moderator who should know better. Can the mods put up a few rules of this thread? Like no false rumours from click bail sites like joe.ie

Seems parades are dropping like flies today. Cork and now Dublin cancelling.

Would anyone go even if it was on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,398 ✭✭✭inisboffin

(IF it's true) I'm confused why people would insist certain kids be quarantined (that class that came in contact with someone) yet their siblings could come to school. So far we see (thankfully!) that kids get less sick from it but also seem to be asymptomatic carriers.
Surely if your sister is home playing with you and sick, it follows that you should stay home too? Kids are lovely little germ factories, as those who work with them a lot know.
Genuine question. I don't see the logic in selective isolation. Perhaps it is limiting but to me it is actually prolonging?

I'd go to outdoor stuff for sure no problem, but the big 'crowd crush' of some huge parades has never been appealing to me as an audience member, zombie virus or not!

Glad they made the right call.

@youngrun you might want to educate yourself a bit on it. If we take the Italian death rate of 3% against the predicted 1.9 million estimated to contract the virus that's a death toll of 57,000 which is a pretty big deal.

This guy predicts way more than that. I guess his opinion of Ireland's health service isn't up to much: https://extra.ie/2020/03/09/news/irish-news/doctor-coronavirus-society-ireland-lives

I agree with you on this I was reading last night about the Swine Flu in 2009. It killed 570 thousand people worldwide, 13 thousand in the US, 30 in Ireland and over 1000 thousand Irish were in ICU, there was no non stop news at the time on Sky or anywhere else, the was no nightly medical updates in Ireland etc life just went on, this is definitely being led by the media we need to calm down on this .

Jesus. Yep it's prolonging I agree.

People seem to think it's protecting but yep. So many thinking it will be 'grand'. Only sensible comment is from a friend who said 'I'd rather get it now as I'm busier later in the year'. But then again they haven't decided if we can catch it multiple times or not have they?

Not same number of deaths, less.
If everyone gets sick at the same time - hospitals are overwhelmed and more people die.

Regarding reinfection you won't be immune for life but you shouldn't catch it again in a few weeks. You should have some immunity for a while (few years) based on other coronaviruses.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/29/health/coronavirus-reinfection.html

Also head of the WHO said unlike influenza the coronavirus isn't seasonal and can continue at the same rate through the warmer summer months.

It's actually not the same number of deaths. Slowing the spread means a longer period but less intense pressure on health services, so there is more capacity to cope. Therefore less deaths.

Council meeting moved from City Hall to Galmont hotel to allow more space so people were not sitting next to one another..
Yet it's ok for students, schoolkids, workers, patients, train users, bus users, etc, to be next to each other.
Ridiculous. No accountability in City Hall

Most spirits top out around 80 proof so aren't above the 60% required to kill the virus.

Difficult to carry soap and water around with you or have it at your desk at work etc for regular disinfecting everything you arrive back etc.

Also alcohol will kill the virus of that there is no doubt, you don’t see soap and water being used for disinfecting you see alcohol.
