Sea temperatures

I'm not sure I can remember the sea being as warm as it is at the moment. In Cork you could spend the day in the sea more comfortably than on the land. According to the site below

Its 20.3 in Cork ranging down to 13.9 in Dublin today. I've been in the med in may or June where it might not be as warm as it is here now.

Depending on conditions I like to surf or kayak and thinking I might take up sea swimming for the rest of the summer, anyone else plans to make the best of the sea at the moment?

Today was our fourth day in a row at the beach up here on the west coast.

Water unbelievable, could stay in it all day.

Can proudly say I'm a 'Jellyfish sting survivor' since yesterday as well.

Water Temp:16.5 °C in Dublin bay, use the bay all year round, certainly nice to have tepid waters, unfortunately all flatwater activity lately, no wind or waves.

I go in most days after work when the day crowds have left. Only worry is I've heard of a few people suffering from weaver fish stings recently. Must get some sort of water shoes.

Was swimming off the west coast last week and it was bloody freezing. Fine once you’re in and moving about but still cold.

I’ve a mobile home right on a beach in Clare. Been in the ocean most days the past few weeks (in fairness we would be if the weather was dull too). Water was cooler today and yesterday than it was earlier in the week. I wouldn’t call it “warm” at the moment. Still, it’s a very pleasant escape from the heat on land.

The west coast waters are usually at their warmest in September.

I’ve sit-on-top kayaks here. I haven’t taken them out this year, but I’m off the next 2 weeks so I plan to go out most days. Been too warm to deal with lugging them down this week. The beach we’re on is very calm and sheltered, but the kids want to try surfing and body boarding, so I must take a trip over to Spanish Point once the heat and the crowds die down. My Surfboards are in the shed at home - haven’t used them in years.

I've Been walking along the beach a few times this week , if the tide is coming in in the afternoon/evening then the water is positively warm ,because it's being warmed by the hot sand - not as warm on an outgoing tide but still nice -

I'm assuming cork harbour is relatively warm at moment - because of the mud flats and it's a partly closed body of water ...

I swam in the sea for the first time in 25 years. It was always too cold. Water was warm at 9pm.

Been to the beach every day since Saturday now (the west). Swimming several times each day, can’t get enough of it!

My hormones had been very wobbly recently and I had horrible fatigue and headaches. All completely disappeared since! Happy as a clam :D

I saw lots of jellyfish the other day, the ones that have a pretty purple ring inside the transparent jelliness. Either I’ve been very lucky so far, or they don’t really sting..?

^^ They're Common/Moon jellyfish, and their sting is mild. I remember my kids having a jellyfish fight with loads of them on the beach a few years ago, with no ill effects. The brown Compass jellyfish have a more severe sting. The Lion's Mane jellyfish is the most dangerous that's common in Irish waters, but it seems to be mainly on the east coast.

I swam in a shallow midlands lake this week. There were pockets of warm water but overall, I’d have expected such a calm, shallow lake to be warmer then it was in such warm weather. It was near enough the week’s most consistent hotspot too. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Freshwater is pretty much always colder than the sea. It's part of the reason most drownings in Ireland occur in inland waterways - cold water shock.

Yeah, I think people often forget that these lakes are frequently fed by cold, mountainous streams. Hence one of the reasons we see the drownings I’ve ranted about today. 😡

I was in the sea a few times myself last week. A really surprisingly pleasant experience. It was not warm but not freezing either. And so good for the soul.

Normally I would only sea swim in a much warmer climate than we have.
