Buying 1st car on Learner Permit

    Hi everyone,

looking for advice on purchasing a car for GF on a Learner Permit. Budget for car and insurance is ideally within €5,000 but it's flexible.

Being put on my policy as a named driver is a no-go as the engine is too big and it is an automatic.

At the moment looking at the likes of a 1.2 Polo or Seat Ibiza from around the 2008 era which are a pretty reasonable €1,600 to insure in her own name with just the Learner Permit. Ideally would be going for something with a bit more poke to manage with national and eventually motorway roads but end of the day has to remain affordable and insurable.

Wondering if there are any other suggestions on what cars or best ways to do this would be. Interestingly enough same age/engine Fiat 500 came in with a quote of €2,800! Really is such hit and miss with the insurers...

Renault Clio would be a safer bet than a Polo or Ibiza 1.2 of that vintage. Those VAG 1.2 engines are not the most robust. Suzuki Swift is another one.

Not the best looking or specced, would it be that much of a difference in reliability or a case of service being done timely and its mostly ok?
