Just flicking through the multitude of dross that is satellite TV, only to discover that only a half dozen music channels are still in existence. Can't remember the last time I've even watched mtv and can't say I've missed it.

    🙈🙉🙊

It might have killed the music channels but there's plenty of new music videos on youtube.

I'd say MTV did a very good job of killing of it's own video stars.

Reality tv killed MTV. I know they have dedicated channels for different music genres but they could have had MTV: Reality so the original MTV still had just music on it. I don't care about what celebrities have in their mansions. MTV glorified being young and pregnant. They showed bratty, self entitled teenagers throwing strops because they didn't get the flashy car they wanted for their "sweet" sixteenth birthday.

I feel like MTV was too powerful in shaping the minds of the youth and deliberately sabotaged from the inside. Now it's Fox news that's warping everyone's mind. At least MTV was counter culture. Fox is just propaganda for the right wingers.

It's not only Fox news, quite a few networks go on the partisan model. If you switched on CNN lately, you would sweat that the Donald was still the U.S. president.

and what's with all the lyric videos, like official videos for the song, with all the lyrics flashing across the screen?

I think most of the music channels don't broadcast to Ireland anymore due to Brexit. Lost a load of them around Christmas time on my Sky box. I used to watch Kerrang a lot back in the early 2000s when there were lots of music channels. I think MTV were showing a lot of shows like Room Raiders and Pimp My Ride at the time. What a daft show Pimp My Ride was! People getting fire places in the boots and all that. Was always jealous of people getting PS2s in the back.

Same thing can be said for Discovery or National Geographic, You would be hard pressed to see any documentary on those channel ! All have been replaced with that Reality TV crap !

Makes sense I suppose, there were a lot of impractical things thrown in on Pimp My Ride!

Some of the cars came out looking worse than when they went in too.

Every video is on vevo YouTube, MTV simply discovered they get better ratings by showing reality TV shows than music videos,

Tik Tok and YouTube is more important than MTV if you want to have a hit song

MTV was incredibly important in the 80s if a video was shown on MTV it would get into the charts like top of the pops in the UK

It was hard to get a hit unless you made a good music video

MTV introduced many Irish and UK groups to America simply by showing a video eg Enya U2

Now we have 100s of channels MTV is just another option it was important in showing early hip hop, rap videos

People are writing songs with a gimmick to get more tik Tok views.

Tik Tok has a billion users it's the no1 video app after youtube
