not sure what the big deal about this programme was horses getting put down is common for commercial reasons might sound cruel to some but do some think horses just graze in a paddock after their racing days are over and owners keep paying for them not unless they were good horses they don' t .

I think we are witnessing the rough end of a progressive/Liberal agenda that is motivated mostly by emotion and outrage than balanced debate. No surprise there I suppose? Why try justify the presence of a racing and betting industry employing thousands and generating billions when images of injured or neglected animals have a far greater impact and thus greater weight in the popular culture? That's the norm in so much media these days. There seemed to be a slight anti-Irish take also, what with the focus on GE etc.

Its all part of a wider attack on hitherto acceptable norms- veganism, animal rights, 'kindness' and healthy lifestyle choices (ie gambling = bad) all conspire incidentally to make things like horse racing and dog racing seem increasingly unacceptable. Now- if animal welfare improves out of all this, then that would be great. But the absolutist and fundamentalist types out there who want to vegan-ise the planet might well have the upper hand for now. Give it a while and furore should die down - it usually does.

One of the issues is that these horses included many horses who could have been rehomed and enjoyed their retirement. Second that its done so cruelly - there are more humane ways. Of course its not new but alot of bad things in the world are not new -people just need to reminded of them and as society grows and moves forward and hold itself to a higher standard these things need to be looked at again and again and again. The oh its nothing new and the what about that - doesnt solve anything - its complacency at is finest. and some of you are implying a witch hunt against farmers- there are plenty of farmers who treat their animals ethically. these horses were not treated ethically. unless you think cruelty is ethical.

Watched it and not sure why Elliott is getting so much stick ?

So the horse retires or gets injured.

Elliott consults with the owner and the owners instructs Elliot to pass it on to a horse "handler/trader" (obviously the owner no longer wants to care/keep the retired/inured horse).

Subsequently the horse is mistreated by the "horse handler" and mistreated / inhumanely killed by an abattoir.

How is this Elliott's fault ?

thought it was lacking in any real substance. The focus was on one abattoir and mostly one trainer. Elliot is no different from any other trainer. If owners are no longer paying the fees then a trainer wants the horse gone. If the owner doesn't deal with it then the trainer has to.

The abattoir was somewhat comical (if you are not a horse) with the guy shooting the horses with a rifle that he seemed in some cases to shoot from one hand and often from a distance. I would say his kill rate from the first bullet was low. Also a lot of lame horses being transported which is cruel whatever angle you are coming from
