Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Air leak

Would anyone have recommendations of someone to detect an engine air leak, in the Dublin area?

My 1989 Toyota Starlet economy light in the dash is staying on orange and driving poorly. It is normally green under normal driving conditions, only going orange when you are heavy on accelerator.

Toyota tell me it's most likely an air leak or valve that vacuum pipes feed into is clogged up. Replaced the valve and no leaks or blockages in the vacuum pipes that feed into it.

Did you trying swapping the valve on the bulkhead?

I replaced this valve here and checked 3 vacuum pipes going into it. Did you mean this valve?

That's a 2e? There's one on the bulkhead with an electrical connection and vacuum pipe connected to it, the vaccum pipe goes from the filter on the inlet manifold to the valve. That valves gives an orange economy light if its giving trouble

    Thanks. What's a 2e?

Is the valve you are talking about on that parts image above?

This is valve i circled in the image above and the one I've replaced BIMETAL VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE

That's the one, it's worth trying changing that. 2e is the 1.3 engine, there's a lot more vacuums on it than the 1 litre. I normally fit the 1 litre carburetor as they are a lot better, 1.3 carburettors can be troublesome

Great thanks! When i disconnected the valve the Economy light went back to green. Is it safe to drive that way for now?

I guess either the sensor is gone? Or the sensor is ok and it's correctly picking up something wrong, maybe a hose leak?

I'll see if i can get replacement sensor. If that works then no further investigation needed :)

I couldn't tell you for definite but I have 4 of those starlets, one has vaccums not even connected I just have them plugged. The car drives with no issues, It should be fine

Disconnected it and drove 40km. Drives fine now, before it needed alot of gas to keep it at a constant 100kph.

Do you know what that valve/sensor is called and what the purpose of it is?

I've absolutely no idea to be honest , can't seem to find it in the parts diagram but even checked the corolla Haynes manual just to see if it was mentioned in that but it doesn't seem to be mentioned there. There's an irish EP70 starlet group on Facebook that might be able to answer that question for you
