On my "get around to" list, I made a couple of knives with a homemade coal forge and it was fun. For the propane forge I'm going with malleable iron fittings + mig tip for the burners, there's quite a few variations of these on YouTube /instructables. Going to use vermicrete for the body (largely because I have a lot of vermiculite lying around) but you might want to use ceramic wool. You'll need a high pressure regulator too (0-2 bar). If you just want a forge then you can get one on ebay (devil forge I think it's called) for about 200 quid. Less risk of blowing yourself up! You're going to need a lot of time also!

Edit, dual burner propane forge runs 166 delivered on eBay. Tempting

thanks for the response. you answered one of my next questions. I have an old gas cylinder which i intend to use for the forge. my plan was to use ceramic wool to line it and a few fire bricks for the inner floor of the forge then buy the burner on its own from devil forges. the only reason i want to do this is because i like to build things but dont want the risk of making the burner as it is above my skill level.

my question was going to be is there an alternative to ceramic wool because i can only find it in large rolls and dont want to fork out 60-80 euro for a massive roll and only use a small bit of it. i thought of maybe using refractory cement but felt it might be too heavy once set and awkward to get to set in the shape i want.

Thanks for that. An interesting perspective. I wonder how many of those manhole and drain covers remain in use today
