Private Investigator

I seen a few ads for private investigators recently in Ireland and they look less than professional. I'm not even sure what they do really that most people can't do online these days. My idea of them is sneaking around after someone because their spouse thinks they are cheating.

What is the legal stance on me hiring one of these people to follow someone around and take pictures of them in public places?

First off to act as a PI they must be licensed by the PSA.

With regards to following people and photographing them, that could be an offence of harassment.

I imagine it would be. What does becoming a 'licensed' PI entitle someone to that an unregistered private individual can't do?

In fairness if they’re good at what they’re meant to be doing you won’t even know they exist so their registered status is a moot point lol

It entitles them to advertise and act as a PI, that's it, they have no additional powers or privileges over that of the ordinary person.

They are entitled to be hired.
