Mirror on an ESB post

We live on a very busy road with the gate slightly concealed so we would like to put up a mirror across us. An esb post is conveniently located on the perfect spot facing our gate. My question is, it it OK to stick a mirror directly to it or should I put up my own pole and stick it there?

I'd just put it on ESB pole with a method (strap/clamp) that doesn't need to drill into the pole

What's the worst that could happen? They ask you to remove it?

    They won't ask.

That sounds like an idea, I suppose yes the worst thing that could happen is they'll ask us to take it down. So what to do if we have to take it down, put a separate pole I guess?

Wondering will the Esb let us get away with it.

ESB don't allow anything on their poles. If it's noticed it'll be removed. Best put up a your own mount.

From this neck of the woods the ESB seem to be turning a blind eye to advertising signage of all shapes and sizes plus mirrors as the OP describes on their poles

If it was me I'd stick it up until someone knocked and told me to remove it.

It's case of fire first and ask questions later, put it up and the worst case is they just remove it, if it improves your road safety then go for it. Politicians have no problem with caking the poles everywhere with posters.

The ESB tend to put poles where they like to suit their line network so they should also facilitate this safety measure.

How about if (knock on wood), an accident happens and a motorist hit the post and our mirror on it, will we get sued for it and be liable to the damages whatsoever?

There's lads down this way with Galway, Roscommon, and Mayo flags hanging out of poles.

There's lads with aerials and satellites hanging off them. A buck not too far from here with a CCTV camera pointing down a National secondary road on one.
No one can answer what legal repercussions you could face if someone hit an ESB Pole with your mirror affixed to same.

Just a word from experience (I have had to use mirrors for years)

Don't skimp on the mirror, especially not on size.
To get an actual view that is worth having and improves safety (instead of entering more guesswork into the equation) the mirror needs to be at least 80 cm in diameter to work across a two lane road and a long enough distance away to be of any help. Any smaller and the picture is just useless.

If you go for something that big, you might be better off setting your own pole.

Also, in my experience, all stainless is best for long lasting quality.
(I've wasted enough money on smaller, cheaper mirrors, shying away from the big expense ...I've learned my lesson)

    You didn't put it up.
You don't know how it got there.
Maybe the ESB put it there?

There will be no permission given and you could forget about that, the ESB could however just tie you up in endless knots with some jobsworth in an office. I'm dealing with them on a more serious important electrical issue and they are just hiding behind rules and red tape instead of applying some real world common sense.

Would they just cut it and dump it ? Not a big deal for a GAA flag but if I had an expensive mirror etc.

If as suggested you need to put up a large mirror for it to be useful then you should really mount it on a post of your own to avoid any potential issues. If you are going to invest money in the hardware for safety then no point in placing on the pole. no point in drawing equivalence between this and a flag hanging on a pole. Not sure about risk in case of accident..

If I'm reading the ops description correctly they are looking to put the mirror across the lane from their drive.

So its the risk of just putting it on an ESB pole and hoping they don't remove it.
(will probably never happen, even if they did ask to remove it the op could point out its their to potentially avoid a collision at said junction that could damage the pole.)

Or installing a post and mirror on someone else's land which could easily be removed and losing both a mirror and post, also opening up alot more liability.

As it happens, today I finished my latest installation.

The old wooden post had rotted away, the left side mirror (acrylic) had gone blind and was too small at 60 cm dia anyway. The right side mirror was stainless and 80 cm and good at that, but had a plastic frame that cracked and didn't hold the mirror anymore.

So I went the whole hog with a galvanised pole, two 60 x 80 full stainless mirrors and a fork to fit hem to. Eyewateringly expensive...but hopefully it'll do me for the next 20 years.

Thanks to my neighbours who not only had no objections to me putting this up on their land but even helped out with a digger to set the pole.

And as you can see ...you can actually see

ESB staff are instructed to remove any such items fixed to wood poles. They won't ask you to take it down or even who owns it.

Won't happen so as they'd have to get out of the van...

    You're hilarious!

I can tell you it does happen,

More to the point: Is it an ESB pole at all. Most rural roadside pokes are telecoms poles.

No, telecoms don't have issues, as there's no safety issues over voltage. Many telecoms poles have metal brackets near the top as foot holds. Most rural poles following the run of a road are telecoms poles.

So why don't they remove election posters?

They're instructed to remove election posters from wood poles. Metal poles or columns aren't ESB Network's property. Sone areas are more active than others in removing them but they are mandated to do so.
