Advice on patio border

    Hi all

I’m planning to lay a porcelain patio but I’d like to edge it flush in granite. I can’t seem to figure out how to do it and wondered if you could advise.

I’m laying a 20mm porcelain slab on a 40mm bed of mortar on a 100mm bed of 804. I really like sawn granite setts - I think the sharp edges work well with the crisp porcelain. But they seem to come in 50mm or 75mm depths.

Do I go with the 50mm and only have 10mm of mortar?

    Are there other options?
    - do I cut the 20mm granite paving stones (e.g. 900x600)?
    - do I use 20mm granite slips (which I can’t seem to find anywhere online but I see a few people use on YouTube.

    Thanks all.

Just lay patio as planned. Then next day when cement is set scrape out the 804 where your border is going. Then lay border on a dryish mix of sand/cement. Don't worry how much 804 is left below. Haunch with a strong mix. Grout. Clean tools and open a beer and enjoy your work.

    Border paviors will be 100*200*50

Thanks so much for that. Couldn’t figure that bit out.

I had been advised to put a small sleeper wall (a block on flat) to retain the 804 and stop the patio from slipping.

    Any view on that?

Can't see a reason why. Haunch (concrete along edge of border to keep it in place) will do same job, and much less faffing about.

Your other option is to lay the setts first on a bed of mortar from subsoil level, haunch both sides and then infill or level out if already in the 804 for the patio
