Engine light (DPF/EGR)

    Hello

I drive a 2016 Audi A4 2.0l TDI S Tronic. The car has about 203k kilometers. I’ve had the car for about 9 months and put about 8k km on the clock since I got it, mostly suburban driving.

Last week while I was driving, an Engine Management light came on. A friend of mine is a part time mechanic and has the VCDS system so we plugged it in and an error for “Particulate Trap Bank 1 - Efficiency Below Threshold” came up. We weren’t entirely sure what it was so we cleared the faults to see if the light comes back on. It came back on a few days later. I should note at this point that the car is not in limp mode and runs as it did when I got it (no power loss that I can notice).

This time I brought the car to a garage (non-Audi garage as Audi service has a long waiting list) to have a look at it and they told me that it is most likely the DPF being clogged up with soot. They put in some fluid into the fuel system to help the cleaning process and told me to go on a long drive for about 40 mins at 2,500-3,000 rpm to clear it out. They cleared the fault and I went on a fairly long motorway run yesterday evening (Dublin to Portlaoise and back), using the paddle shifters to ensure RPMs were between the advised range. On a normal drive this morning, the engine light came back on again.

I don’t mind paying for this to be fixed of course, but what I’d like to avoid from happening is one garage telling me it’s one thing and another saying it’s something else and I end up paying to fix things which aren’t the problem (which has happened to me before on a different car).

Has anyone had this issue on Audi vehicles (or VW Group cars)? Open to suggestions/recommendations who to bring the car to also.

    Fault is as follows:
    19226 - Particulate Trap Bank 1
    P2002 00 [237] - Efficiency Below Threshold

I did google the fault but many people saying different things.

    Thanks in advance everyone!

It's a very popular issue on those where the LP EGR blocks up and in turn starts blocking up the DPF.

Usually replacing the EGR sorts it but if the DPF is very bad it may need cleaning or replacement. You can tell by the colour of the soot.

LP EGR is a bit of a hoor on those to change, not a handy job, unfortunately.

I'd personally not go back to the garage that put some fluid or whatever in it, they clearly aren't in any way familiar with what they are dealing with. Go to Audi or someone who specialises in VAG stuff. It's a very popular issue.

Thanks. I’ve been told that if it was the EGR there would be a separate fault code for that and I would see performance issues/smoke but I don’t feel/see any of that.

Yeah, that's incorrect information you've been given.
