Hi I have been given the task to recommend and help with the purchase of wine for my friend. She is not a wine drinker.
She will have approx 50 people.
The corkage is €4 and the budget is 10-11
Is Aldi or Tesco a good place to go
What would be safe to choose.
I do have another friend that runs a restaurant so I can check with her.
Is it possible to go to a Wholesaler?
Would it be 60- 40 in favour of red?
Or as it is warmer would white be more popular?
So if anyone has advice on how to go about it and what to choose I would be grateful for the advice 🙏

If your budget is 10-11 euros per bottle then I would see if your local off licence has these wines.
Organic wines from Sicily from Da Vero.

The messr del fauno nero d'avola v nice also.

I think 50-50 red and white for summer wedding.

Dont get anything with 14 percent or higher alcohol.

So is the budget €10/11 per bottle including corkage which leaves wine budget €6/7 ?
No harm to check with the venue maybe just to compare ?
Wines Direct in Mullingar one of many options and can give advice based on budget / menu etc.

If you are only looking to spend 7e per bottle then it would need to be ALDI.
The problem in ALDI is that they dont have too much stock out and you will want to get a lot of the same bottles. These are all safe bets.

Wont get anything drinkable in Tesco for 7e unless they have a promo on eg for Santa Rita

She will spend 10- 11 on the wine plus the corkage so hope to get something good for that price.

You could check online in countries as Portugal, Spain, France or Italy where a 1€ bottle of wine beats any 10EUR bottle in Ireland, but then you would also need to check with Revenue how much it would cost tax wise.

Phew, that gives you a few more options.
Do you know the menu ?
For me a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc should do the trick for a white.
I'm a fan of Merlot but am no connoisseur !
Maybe for this event you might prefer to avoid the obvious stores.
If it was me I'd go to local off licence or contact a few online with menu and haggle based on quantity.
What are you thinking of in terms of quantity - 1 bottle per 2 people or ?
Do you need to consider champagne or drinks on arrival ?

With that budget you should be able to get something from off licences people wouldnt be familiar with from their supermarket

This irish online wine specialist has a wedding guide and a good selection in the 10-11 range.

Not an option, legally, I'm afraid.
    Revenue won't entertain you.
Also you are exaggerating the price differential.

I used wineonline.ie for my own wedding - iirc we paid about €11 a bottle for some really nice Syrah.

They have a decent selection and you shouldn't run into any stock issues that you might with Aldi or other supermarkets.

You won't get a bottle of wine in France for €1, and if you could, it probably wouldn't really be drinkable.

You could drive over and pick up some wine in France, but you would only be allowed 120 bottles/90 litres per person travelling.
Not everyone would be bothered doing that though.

If you have good enough proof that it's for a wedding rather than resale the limits don't apply. I've heard of people bringing sample invites and various organisation-related emails to show this to customs if asked.

I understand you can bring back as much as you like from France. If it is over the "accepted" limit, you can be asked why you have it. A wedding is a perfectly good reason. They are more worried about you trying to sell it.

Sorry, yeah, I should have clarified that.
I've often brought above the limit, but have never been stopped or questioned myself.

Am I going to get shot for suggesting NI? Wine prices up there carry €1.20 less duty per bottle which, combined with greater purchasing power, can lead to great savings. For example, Sainsbury is currently running a buy 6 get 25% off offer. These are common with Tesco and Asda took. (Sorry not to help out local small businesses but for a wedding, this might be the better option.)
