Medical Card Renewal and the HSE Hack

Just an FYI to anyone who has a medical card due for renewal in the next month or so...

Due to the hack online reviews / renewals cannot be completed. Nor is it possible to check current status or eligibility.

You have to download or call to request a form to renew, but as there is no specific paper based renewal form, you have to fill in the Medical Card Application Form and submit it with all paperwork as per a new application.

I was advised on the phone that it is NOT necessary to have the form signed again by your Doctor, (but if you can get it done, its probably wise!)

    Oh the joys.

Very helpful and good to know, it seems more and more areas of the HSE are affected by this appalling cyber attack.

I'm surprised this is what is expected of people, I would have thought it more practical to extend cards due to expire imminently, by a month or two until systems restored.

Yes, thats normal enough, if Card is not being reviewed, a new one issued 2/3 months before expiry date, I got my own in Jan, expiry end of march. I've a full one due to medical condition. Glad you got yours processed before this awful cyber attack.

I'm trying to renew a medical card and learned that this is still a problem the hard way. My password expired (I guess because the hackers got the passwords for this) and my renewed password isn't being accepted. 🤬

Has your card expired or due to expire ? What password are you referring too?

Actually, I just recalled advice on this a few posts back, with this new layout I'm not sure how to copy and paste, can you scroll back a few posts back and there's the answer you need 😏

Just an update on this - submitted review on the medical card form, without GP signature (as per advice as the card had not yet expired) and it was accepted. Received a text from Client Registration Unit within a few days to say the forms had been received, and new card arrived in the post a few days ago.

    Hi Loueze,

Can I ask how long it took after you got the text saying they got your application? I got the text last Tuesday with a reference number. Of course the web page to check progress of your application is not working.

    @Cherry Blossom

It took approx 3 weeks between getting the text with the reference # and receiving the new card.

(Very straightforward review, no change in circumstances).

Thank you. I have still at least two weeks to go then.

Have a medical card thats expired next month , tried to renew it but sadly they have lost all of the details

Last card i had they said is from 2015 after then i never had one

sent them a copy of the existing card and wont work with them , have to apply from scratch for it , morons

Whilst I don't subscribe to the discription you've used it is very surprising you have vanished off the system completely.

Details of what problems the hack actually caused are vague but I've not heard of people's information going missing entirely and certainly not details of a current and valid MC.

Are you using the card for pharmacy, prescriptions? GP SERVICES? Clinic? All would have details on and current status of your current card. If as you say the HSE have no record of your current card, services at GP and pharmacy (if getting prescriptions) would be affected , so it's very perplexing to be honest.

A new application should not be an issue if your circumstances have not changed, but if using current card for GP services, I'd certainly ask GP what they can check

Im a healthy person and never seen any GP in the last 6 years Found out this problem because i wanted new glasses Again Card i have says valid until sept 2020 Called them and they said no problem its another year valid because of covid But now the dont know me for the last 5 years

    September 2020🤔

The hack wasn't an issue last year, there was some extensions re covid but I'd assume those being advised MC was being extended would have been notified. Has your opticians been able to verify status of card🤔

The question remains as to why the HSE are saying last card was 2015

Are expiring medical cards still being automatically renewed by the HSE?

Relative's one expires in March 2022, but checking online shows it is now March 2023

Hi there, yes in some cases they are, like your relative, mine had an expiry date of march 2022 but it showed March 2023 on the system, sure enough new one arrived about 2 weeks ago.

I've a long term illness requiring monthly prescriptions and this may mean mine is automatically renewed so I guess it depends on individuals circumstances, needs etc. if a card is being reviewed, people are generally notified in writing well in advance of a renewal date .

Your relative should receive updated card very soon.
