Joint car ownership

    Hi all,

So myself and my girlfriend are both currently learning to drive, and don't live at home so don't have the option of becoming a named driver on our parents insurance. Our housemate has offered to sit in with us until we pass the test.

We were thinking of buying a cheap car together until we pass the test, which looks like it'll be well into next year with the delays. How does this work with insurance? I'm presuming one of us will be the main driver and the other named, but is that allowed if we each own and will drive half?

Also, whenever we buy separate cars in the future and take out separate insurance policies, I'm presuming this will disadvantage whichever one is the named driver as they'll have no no claims bonus?

    Thanks!

You have it all correct there. One owner, one insurance policy, one additional named driver. Just the way it works.

As for fairness, the only way to square it all up.is an arrangement between you both, the person that will gain most from being the policyholder could pay more......but to be honest, I wouldn't bother.

Only one person is allowed to be named as owner on the VRC (logbook) so you'll have decisions to make right from the start.....

Yeah to be honest it's not really a long term thing, just looking for something to practice in to pass the test so it should be grand for the year
