Recommendations for books for child scoring low in standard tests

Hi, i have a 13 year old who will be starting secondary school in september. Scored below avarage in reading and spelling in his standardized tests. He reads books like diary of a wimpy kid and tree house.

Has anyone recommendations for books his age group might like. Adventure or mystery.

What was his reading score? Was it broken down into sub tests for you? Was the teacher surprised?
Adventure/ Mystery , the Percy Jackson series might appeal or Skulduggery Pleasant .


Spelling wise , you’d need a targeted program rather than just having him read more . There’s a free downloadable program called SNIP that might be of use but it’s a bit of a slog .

Sten 4 was his reading a d sten 3 for spelling. Been like this for along time. No surprise. We have done it all. Snip, word shark, toe by toe. The whole 9 yards.

He reads at night so I just want a series of books to keep up the reading.

Has he read the Artemis Fowl books?They are great and there's a film coming out too. Many of the senior boys who have attended my classes enjoyed the ones below.
