Domain owner / registration

    Hi All

Is there a way to find the registered owner of a domain name? I'm doing a favour for a mate, he's not PC savvy and had a friend do a website for him years ago (in construction). Things have changed and his original acquaintance is is not forthcoming in passing on the login details to him in order to get the site revamped.

His domain now appears unreachable via web, ping or tracert, but when I try to register it it is reported as registered. I'm unclear where to go now. I have a nice shiny website for him built locally, but cannot take it further.

He told me today he paid something recently so I've asked for the invoice assuming / hoping it's a hosting company that I can contact. So the question is - is it possible to find a registered domain address owner?

    Any feedback much appreciated.

You can find out who the registrar is, which nameservers it's using and where it's pointing (if anywhere)

You probably won't be able to see who the registrant is, as the data is redacted due to GDPR

But the registrar should be able to assist.

If your friend knows the domain provider then he should directly talk with the service provider. Otherwise, the following tools can help them to know the details of the owner:

    https://www.whois.com/

    https://safenames.net/domain-names/whois-search

    https://lookup.icann.org/lookup

However, if the owner has purchased any feature to hide the personal details then I don't think it would be possible to know the webmaster. But yes, host details would definitely appear there. So, he can contact the host for further queries.

Host details DO NOT appear in the whois directly.

You can do a lookup of the IP address(es) that a domain is pointing to, but with a lot of them using CDNs of various kinds that often isn't very helpful.
