Might be better off getting a cheap rental from Enterprise etc, particularly if you are a city.

Most main dealers offer it, some independents do too but in 95% of cases it would need to be pre booked and unlikely to be suitable for you now.

a rental would cost, a replace ment is free and the insurance can be transferrred

A loaner car is not free though. You're paying for it as part of the repair cost, with the exception of course being a car under warranty.

Even if you had a list, the loaner car could be taken at that time. Best advice would be to call larger dealerships who are more likely to have a loaner available, and check before committing to work.

Why would you expect a replacement car for free? Random dealer does not know you from Adam, you're not a customer, never spent any money with them and you want them to give you a €20k, €30k or whatever car for nothing because your car broke down near them?

I wouldn't think it unfair of any dealer to charge for a replacement vehicle in those circumstances

Fair comment - bear in mind you have a relationship with that garage - you're known to them and you spend your money there so they give you a car.

Also bear in mind, in main dealer world there are usually standards obligations on them from their brand to give current year replacement cars to service customers. World of difference between a 2009 car and a 2021 in terms of cost, depreciation etc. I think a small daily charge is perfectly acceptable.

It’s totally at any garages discretion and dependent on what they have free. Doubt you’ll get a list of garages who do it. Would be rare enough in Dublin at least.

I only got offered it when I had a company car and half the time they’d bring in something from a rental company despite having 100s of cars in the yard.

For any warranty work I’ve gotten done I’ve always gotten a like for like replacement from the dealer - it’s the least I’d expect.

For routine servicing I’d ask if they had something I could borrow - 50% you’d get lucky and most of the time they’d offer a lift back home / office after dropping the car off.

I had a fair bit of work done on a 10 year old Skoda last year and it was taking longer than they’d expected so they gave me a loan of something from the sales lot for a few days - but I’d had bought the car from them new and had it serviced with them

A list wouldn't be accurate anyway as it depends on circumstances. Sometimes garages have cars available, sometimes not. It also depends on whether you bought a car there or not, and probably only a new car i.e. did you give them a lot of custom. I get my now 9 year old car serviced annually at a local main dealer, if I want a car I think it's like 25 or 30 quid a day. I usually just drop mine off and get a lift back instead though. The loaners in that particular dealer tend to be garage cars that staff drive to and from work that are probably demo cars or ex-demos that are about to be put on sale, that's my impression anyway. I don't think it would be financially viable for a dealer to have a fleet of loaners sitting there ready if people needed them.

You are not going to find a list for this sort of thing as it would be impossible to keep such a list up to date. Main dealers have courtesy cars for when customers are in getting their car serviced or repaired. However there is no guarantee that there will be one available as they have limited numbers of these cars and they could all be allocated to other customers. You would need to pre-book a car in advance rather than rocking up expecting one to be available.

You can transfer your own insurance over with hire companies etc. to save on rental costs. Your own insurer may charge nothing or a fee. Some hire companies will deliver and collect you.

From a dealer it varies, better to ring ahead. Some run their own hire companies or have nearby partners

The transfer option may only give TP on the loner car even with a comp policy so you need to check
