I would like to start doing some small carpentry projects in the shed but have no experience if this. I would like to be able to produce small items, not frame the roof of a house.

Can you recommend good self directed learning material?

There is a woodwork forum on this site you should definitely start there.

Good advice already provided. Have you a specific project in mind to start off with ?
Appropriate tools obviously required also. I'm a big fan of The Restoration Couple on YouTube but there are loads.
