If you find Ireland is way too expensive to buy or rent and fairly expensive for other needs of life - food, healthcare, cars, broadband, etc. to what country in Europe would you move and, briefly, why.

Moving to Belgium, briefly because the wife's contract is only a year.

Probably somewhere in the Mezzogiorno region of Italy.

I could definitely live with being stuck in Bari.

It's exceptionally beautiful, very safe, on the Adriatic, nice weather, nice women, good food, good wine. Italy has excellent healthcare.

Walk into a shop 15 minutes before closing and you will be treated as a leper

Damn right too. Many years ago, when I worked in a shop, we'd start cleaning up around 15 minutes before closing time (in the hope that we might all catch our trains and buses home). The place might've been dead for the previous hour, but the very second the vacuum cleaner made an appearance, everyone and his mother would feel the need to walk in.

    It's swings and roundabouts.

You can pick up a very nice property here for €200,000 - €250,000 especially in the Midlands.

Property taxes are extremely low, but personal taxes for those earning €50k or more are high.

Little difference in utilities and still no water charges, but imperfect health system held back primarily by unions.

Malta would be a nice option, but like here, as it's an island, it's not cheap.

I don't find Ireland too expensive but if I had to move it could be France or Italy.

I'm thinking Israel myself, you have the plus side of still being able to compete the Eurovision song contest along with the European football competitions and not to forget the fabulous weather.

That said you have to take into account those Palestinians, they can be very opinionated.
