RC battery

I bought an ERTL RC tractor from Marks Models as seen. I opened it to find its missing its battery and charger. The battery is a 9.6V Ni-mh battery. Is it possible to use a 9.6v battery but a li-ion if its a better option power wise so I wont have to be charging it too often.
