Is it possible to install wall vents in a home by myself with using a basic drill?

I need to install wall vents in a few rooms in a house I rent out.

I want to avoid hiring someone as it can cost a lot of money doing so. I was wondering could I drill out a hole through the drywall and the brick and install it myself? Or is it more difficult than it seems?

Is it possible, yes... but if you need to ask etc...

How do you plan to do it? You really want a diamond core and a drill with a clutch.

Or you can drill a serious of small holes the circumference of the hole and chisel out the block... having done this once, I wouldn't ever do it again.

Brick or block house? Cavity wall?

Brick house it is possible to cut out a single brick and install a vent.

It is possible, but you'd need an sds drill/chisel and some experience. Also line the vents with waste pipe and make sure they are angled down so the water does not run in.

It appears from reading the replies of this thread that I may not be able to do this on my own after all. Especially considering I don't have the boring equipment etc.

Just wondering how expensive it is approximately to hire someone to do the job for me? I've heard it might cost 50 Euros to hire someone to call over to install a couple of vents excluding the cost of the actual vents themselves?

50 per hour or 50 total?

Well 50 Euro to install a couple of wall vents. That's just the figure that was given to me and I'm not sure whether it is accurate.

I think you need to budget for more than €50.

When the holes are drilled; they would need to have a pipe inserted to line the area prior to fitting inside & outside vents,
Perhaps 50 euro per vent fitted,

50 euro would be the cost of renting an SDS & Diamond bit for a weekend from your local plant hire,
And you would still need to purchase supplies; sorry but there's no way your going to get any sort of professional to arrive and carry out that sort of work for 50 quid,

Diamond core drill bits aren't cheap neither and the cost has to be factored in to the usage,

Is that a cash man with the Lidl work pants?

The plastic 9x6 vents will cost you about €10-15 in woodies (that's just 1 set -inside & outside).it might take about 1-2 hours for a lad too do it so €50 wouldn't cover it.it would be closer too €70-€100 too install 1 vent.

I got a stove fitted a few years ago and they charged me €150 to fit a vent.

If you don't have the experience or correct equipment..
And it's a property you're renting then you honestly shouldn't be worried about a few hundred euro to get the room vents fitted.and any other work that's needed to bring this property to an acceptable standard..
Surely a months rent will cover the cost.. and it will be done correctly

I would imagine that it would cost me maybe 300 Euros to hire someone to install a couple of wall vents.

I think you lost a zero there.

Shouldn’t the landlord be doing the work, or are you the landlord?

    If it helps to do things on the cheap would be;

For any room that doesn't have a fire; you could apply for a he improvement grant towards upgrading the windows; in this case you can get letter box flaps built in to the top of the frame which mean you don't require a hole in the wall,

But any room which has a fire or the kitchen still needs to have a vent in the wall.

And that would be a cheap alternative option, where you qualify for government funding.

By "letter box flaps" are you talking about "trickle vents"?

I'm trying to search online for the grants that you're talking about such as the one found here: https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/housing/housing_grants_and_schemes/home_renovation_incentive.html

But it seems these kinds of grants ended a couple of years ago.

are window vents an option? They can be retrofitted to the frame; quicker and less messy than drilling but get someone who knows what they're at to do it
Are you talking about trickle vents?

Trickle vents are an option but from looking at videos of people retrofitting vents into windows online it seems to be bit of a cumbersome process. I'm not sure how common it is for people to do it and whether I could readily hire someone to do it for me. I believe it involves detaching the window from the frame and drilling the vent into it.

There’s a massive difference in capacity between a trickle vent and a regular 5” pipe

I've done 14 of these myself in my house. would I recommend anyone else to do it ? No not unless your off your head like me.

It's no fun even with a proper core drill and diamond bit.

Why would you need to do 14? You only need one wall vent per room?

Cost me 850 this year to put in 5 vents. This was the low end of the scale and was paid "cash".
