Wood pellet boiler recommendations.

Has anyone any thoughts on the likely cost of getting a wood pellet boiler for a 2000sq ft. Bungalow. Replacing a heat pump.
Had a small browse of the grant spira model but unsure as to what size would be needed. Couldn't see prices anywhere.
Is a storage unit for pellets necessary and is outdoors for the boiler not really advisable?

Being honest i thought everyone got rid of them because they were more hassle than benefit

I think you might be right. No one seems to be overly keen on them and between the hassle and cost it might just be best to go with oil like the vast majority. House is older so heat pumps don't really suit I think.
In principle seems like a good idea but in reality it's proving very difficult to make work.

Grant are a manufacturer why would they give impartial advice about what is out there on the market and is best for you without having a bias towards the goods they supply? Not saying they wont I just wondering why .

We replaced wood-pellet burning with oil some years back.

The wood-pellet burner proved unreliable. Specifically, the ignition arrangement, the ignition element needed frequent replacement. It may have been more reliable if the system had had some form of thermal reserve. A store of heated water that the domestic circuits could have used without calling frequently on the burner.

The boiler needed weekly cleaning of ash and soot. The pellets had to be carried from the storage tank to the local store beside the boiler.

We still have the boiler case. It now has an oil burner in place of the pellet burner.

Please ask any intended supplier if the domestic control systems that you already have are appropriate for wood-pellet burning.

Thanks. Did you find running costs favourable in anyway? And was the hassle the main reason for the switch to oil?

To be honest, I did not keep records of running costs. The 3 or 4 monthly replacement of the pellet ignition element was enough to persuade me to change. Got bad hassle from herself when she had to go without heated rooms 2 or 3 days in winter.
Do ask intended supplier about reliability (and service) arrangements.

Forget the wood pellet boiler, fit somethng like a Popular Firebird Oil Boiler, if serviced anually, are trouble free and will last for 25 plus years.
I have yet to meet someone who replaced his oil boiler with a wood pellet one and is happy with his decision, but the number of households who are dumping their pellet boilers for oil is constantly on the increase.
No one will buy a used pellet boiler, you may have to pay someone to take it off your hands.
Oil will eventually go up in price but you'll always have clean, reliable heating system and a warm home to boot.

Thanks. I think minds made up now at this stage! Just have to find a good installer now who can take out a heat pump and put in an oil boiler and tank etc. Midlands area if anyone has any recommendations feel free to pm. Thanks again.
