Missed Irish phone calls

I've had several missed calls this week from what would appear to be Irish landline numbers, one in Belturbot Cavan, the other Claremorris Mayo. Upon returning the call, I get a message that the number is unavailable. I'm assuming this is yet another scam.

    Anyone else get these?

Isn't that the Cavan thing to do? Give you one ring so you call them back...

Can't see them chancing even one ring in case you answered on the first one

I got the Belturbet one. Didn’t answer as there really is no reason for me to be getting a call from there. I googled the number because I thought there might be some civil service office tucked away up there due to decentralisation but the search brought up nothing so I ignored.

You can purchase virtual numbers that seem to be from an area but can be from anywhere in the world.

We used to have a UK based operation, it had a Cheltenham number, it rang in an office in Galway - and that was many years ago (pre internet)

    Here's an example

    So ignore them

They’re either VoIP numbers bought, often using stolen credit card and personal identities, or they’re entirely fake caller ID.

What is coming up on your phone may be as useful as someone setting the “reply-to” field on email.

There’s almost zero probability the call actually originated in Ireland.

It’s the same when you get scam calls from overseas numbers, they’re usually entirely faked and have nothing whatsoever to do with the places associated with those numbers.

The problem is it will eventually make phone calls as useless as some email platforms became.

I had 2 missed calls from an 085 number during the week. Tried calling back but call wouldn’t connect.

I got a couple texts from Irish mobile numbers saying my "parcel will arrive tomorrow" and to click on the link to track my parcel etc. I just delete them.

I get a lot of "Amazon" calls, and they all appear to be an Irish number

Those parcel delivery texts are a scam. Theres some dodgy link in the texts.

My husband recently got a text about his Bank Of Ireland account being hacked and to click on the link in the text. Funny, he doesn’t have an account with Bank Of Ireland...

Well done, they are a scam.

There are a number of text scams operating at the moment purporting to come from courier companies.

They’re actually some of the easiest ones to fall for too. They’re going to have to implement spam filters on SMS clients on mobiles, more so around the URLs being sent.

A lot of boards users love to answer calls like these. Be it scam or time wasting cold call. They just love the excitement of answering blocked, or unknown, numbers.

I've got a few that ring for a few seconds then stop. When I google them they come up as reputable businesses around Ireland such as B&Bs but I have nothing to do with any of them.

There are about two or three people that know my landline.

But I get plenty of calls from bogus numbers. The sheer amount of scam numbers ringing is ridiculous.

I got 12 083 calls between last Thurs and Sunday, 2 parcel text messages and a call from a +21 number.... i think my phone number has been hacked from somewhere recently.... this was not happening to this level before

Yeah I thought it might be about my vaccination registration but there's no such office in Belturbet. Did ring it back but got a "Sorry, can't be reached" recording.

Why would you try calling back? Don't do this!

What could happen? I don't ever phone back the ones from international numbers but what risk is involved if Irish?

If it is someone who needs to contact you for some legitimate reason they will let the call ring long enough to let you answer.

If it cuts out quickly and leaves a "missed call" that is suspicious, ignore it and delete.

Yeah the 049 call I missed rang several times. I couldn't answer because I was in the middle of work related stuff.

I didn’t have my phone beside me so I’ve no idea if it just rang once then they hung up. I wouldn’t have bothered if it was one missed call but when I saw 2 missed calls, I automatically thought someone must have been trying to reach me.

    Landline prefix inside Ireland.

    Belturbet / Cavan 049 *** ****
    Claremorris / Mayo 094 *** ****

    They’re all probably fake numbers.

    +210 – unassigned
    +211 – South Sudan
+212 – Morocco (including Western Sahara)
    +213 – Algeria
    +214 – unassigned
    +215 – unassigned
    +216 – Tunisia
    +217 – unassigned
    +218 – Libya
    +219 – unassigned

Really unlikely the calls are actually from those places

Used to have an old dude ringing me, dunno how he got my number. I had a few ads up so maybe that or he just picked my number by random.

Asked me about the cost of livestock or something, I had no idea what was going on. So random, I live in Dublin.

****er kept calling me, day and night. Asking me silly ****. This went on for a year, he'd ring me in the early hours and very late at night when I was asleep.

Told him that I knew he was bored, he asked why? I said because you're bored of banging your Ma. Dude was shocked and said I a was abusing him. WTF? This dude was a lonely old man.

So I just got an app that blocked calls from 'unknown' numbers. Sorted it.

EDIT: there are apps to block unknown numbers. Sorts it.

Yeah got a few from 083 numbers last week, I don't answer any numbers that I don't know. If it's something important and someone really needs to get a hold of you, they will leave a message. ****ing Facebook assholes leaking my info :(
