Turn right at a newly installed no turning right sign

    Hi Folks,

So today morning, I accidentally made a right turn at a traffic light and I saw there is a newly installed "No turning right" sign. When I saw the sign, it was too late  .

There is a camera standing high above the traffic light and I thought this camera could record my reg.

Do you think I will get a point and penalty and how long does it take to arrive to me?

    BT

    Which junction is it?
Not all cameras are there to read reg plates. Some are just for traffic flows etc and unless someone was watching and decide to take action it's probably fine.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

It is a junction near Galway city centre. It was about early morning and the road was quiet so I hope no one was watching the camera at that time.

Thats not how it works. Its an automatic system that takes a photo of your reg plate. No one is watching it.

There are a few around Dublin that catch you going through red lights but I’ve never heard of cameras that catch you taking illegal right turns

As above it’s probably just a traffic flow camera

No you won't get a ticket.

Only cameras at lights that record for offences are at two Luas crossings in Dublin. They were installed after numerous crashes and near misses.

Not many new no right turn junctions in galway, only one I can think of is at the courthouse where the right turn coming from the salmon weir side has been changed to busses only(in my opinion another stupid idea), the camera at this junction is for traffic management only, ( weather there is anyone in the office monitoring it is another story)

Yeah traffic management camera there at the court house, seems to be pointing in the direction of Eglington but dunno if they can rotate. Should be grand

Yes, I made the right turn there.

I was heading over this junction again today and I saw one taxi and another car were trying for turning right too. It seemed they also did not notice the sign. I would think the taxi driver would know about the sign but he might ignore or the taxi would be allowed to make a right turn the same as a bus.

A big lesson for today for me.

Thank you all for your advice.

Ya, taxi's are allowed to use the bus lane

Yeah the courthouse one is new no-right-turn.
I almost did it myself but the lane is now painted so I realised they had changed it.

Have you ever seen any of them rotate? Countless times while waiting at junctions I've been looking for any movement from the camera, still haven't seen one rotate.

Yes they do as spotted one on my way home and stopped at lights and noticed how quick it moved to monitor traffic flows.

I think you are confused by the meaning of the word “accidentally”, “negligently” or “without due care and attention” would be more apt!

    Was that in galway?

Nothing to worry about. The tech for a red light/turn on red camera is very different from a standard CCTV camera. You'd know you've been done as most flash even in the day time.

Chaulk it up to a learning experience and have a second coffee before the commute in the morning ;)

It's not a high horse; I have to deal with this daily. My particular favourite is the neighbour who has been here 6 months and claimed not to notice it. I suggested she might not want to acknowledge driving carelessly and it would be better to acknowledge deliberately breaking the law as it's a more minor offence than suggesting she cannot see signposts over such a long period. It's a particularly tight turn and in the 5 years here I have seen at least 10 near serious injuries.
