    Hi Guys,

For many reasons my wife is resigning from her job.

She has worked for the company for over 10 years.

Its not a redundancy or being forced out - she has just decided she doesnt want to work there anymore for personal reasons.

Being the fact that she has resigned as opposed to being sacked or being made redundant, is there any financial assistance available.

I have seen that there is Jobseekers benefit & allowance

Is there a specific one she should apply for? as she has paid taxes & stamps for many years

If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be great

    Many Thanks

    Tanka

She should apply for jobseekers benefit if she has enough credits in the relevant year (2019) but may face a disqualification period of up to 9 weeks - this is at the discretion of the deciding officer, so she should still apply right away.

If she has a mygovid, going through mywelfare.ie is the quickest route!

Unfortunately she does not have one - i think she needs to make an appointment & visit the office to get one?

She might do, for a public services card anyway. I think she might be able to do an application with a basic account though - just email address and password. You can try it and worst case, request a paper form.

She can apply for a MyGov account once she has her PPS number and an email address - pin number would be sent in the post in a few days.

It is often said that it easier to find another job while still employed.

She should also inform Social Welfare about any valid reason/reasons that led her to resign, so they know that her resignation isn't just on a whim or for a trivial reason. That might influence the decision whether or not to disqualify her for up to 9 weeks.

    Guys,

got into mygov last night & started an application

There doesn't seem to be any different application between Jobseekers Benefit & allowance.

I understand that Benefit is based on your PRSI contributions & allowance is means tested?

However, there seems to be only one type of application & i got to:

To complete this application you will need to provide information about your spouse/cohabitant/civil partner including their PPSN, bank balance and weekly income.

That would seem to suggest that its means tested?

Am i in the wrong place?

    Thanks for any direction

If you progress further you will see a question that asks 'if you do not qualify for jobseeker's benefit, do you wish to apply for jobseeker's allowance?'

    Thanks endofrainbow,

But i want to apply for "benefit" on her behalf - she has many years of working & paying her social insurance.

This is not means tested as far as i know.

This is what makes me think i am applying in wrong place.

i.e. what does my pay, bank balances etc. do with it?

    Many thanks

    Tanka

It's just the way the application is structured - if she doesn't qualify for benefit she may qualify for allowance - saves applying once and being turned down and then having to start the process again.

They are asking for all the info up front, so they can give you whichever is more beneficial.

For example, if she was in a low paying job and only qualified for, say €100 benefit, but would get €150 on allowance, they would give her the latter.

Whatever happens, she will be means tested after wile. Is it 9 months?
Also, since she has worked part of the year and you are also working any benefit is taxable too.

Just to add. I’m probably jumping ahead. Not sure what her plan is going forward. If she plans to get another job or upskill or be a stay at home mom etc.

But the resources when being unemployed are great. In terms of courses etc. So make use of them.
Plus if she does a course she comes of the live register so you can stretch out the 9 months means testing.
I managed to change careers from printing to IT. Just done course after course.
Also to do voluntary work in the role she see herself in. Will keep her sane to.

do you need to show proof over the 9 months on jobseekers benefit that you are actively looking for work? Or is the case that they dont care as you paid prsi and will only look for proof of jobseeking when you go on the allowance.

You have to be genuinely seeking work for the whole period.
If you cannot show that you are, either payment can be stopped.

    Hi Guys,

Got this sorted through mygovid - thanks to all.

My wife has now received a letter & text saying that she will have a phone call individual activation meeting this afternoon.

she was asked to register with mygovid (already done) and jobs Ireland.

We tried to register here, but it wanted a CV - my wife is nearly 60 & does not have a leaving cert.

What should she expect from todays call?

    Many Thanks

    Tanka

Just to add, I was in a similar place last year.

I had to leave as the job I was in became very toxic and my mental health was being affected. I stated this to my case officer.

I received social welfare straight away, there was no 9 week wait.

I was only on it for about 4 mounts, my new job is going great and I'm in a much better place

    Thanks bennyinerie,

Not meaning to sound bad but as i said my wife is nearly 60, has no qualifications, not even a leaving cert. we live in a real rural area with very high unemployment.

Like you she received Job seekers Benefit based on her PRSI payments for 9 months - then job seekers allowance, which she wont get based on a means test.

she would just be wasting everyones time going on courses.

There are many younger people with qualifications & few jobs.

Basically she would like to have the 9 months of Benefit (receiving some of the PRSI she has paid all of her life back & become a home maker again. Not costing the state anything.........

How to explain this to the officer

    Tanka

Well first of all don't say that.

You're not seeking a job so it will be rejected.

Remember she is looking for a job and wants a job. Once your allowance is used up then ask them to stop.

    Thanks afatbollix

    Point understood

Anything else, anybody who has been through this?

If you're signed off work due to mental health reasons/stress, you are able to claim illness benefit if your employer is not paying you.

Illness benefit is not means tested, a lot of folks don't seem to realise this.

Rather than just quitting a job outright, you could have your doctor sign you off on sick leave, legitimately claim illness benefit and use that time to find another job.

She can just walk into the office and apply for JSB immediately after leaving the job. She may not face a disqualification period.

    I didn't.

Dont worry about public service card either. They'll give her a temporary cardboard one. Don't worry, it's all very fool proof ahah.
