    hi all,

I want to use pellets, straw or hardwood, as a substrate to grow mushrooms.

Does anybody know where to buy the pellets in Dublin?

    thanks

    would wood shavings do?

most places which specialise in logs/wood fuel should have them too i guess, e.g. mulch (based in coolock and rathfarnham)

I put out some wine cap spawn this evening.
Kept it a few weeks in a box of beech woodchips to grow

Put it out in the garden today covered in beech.

A, hardwood is best for them to eat

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, those wood pellets are made from pine, which is softwood and not good to be used as mushroom substrate
I am not far from Rathfarnham so I might pas by mulch and ask them in case they know how to get hardwood ones. Thanks

The pelleting process pasteurises the wood and removes all competing organisms, which is very handy to be used as a substrate

    Cheers

You could buy straw from a farmer. The big round bales are not very expensive but it would probably add expense to get it from a farm to your suburban location. If you could find a farmer who makes the old-style small bales so much the better.
I live in North County Dublin and wanted some straw to put under some strawberry plants. I bought a round bale from a local farmer for under €40 and was able to collect it in my box trailer, but obviously you would have to make arrangements for transport.
The bale lasted me 3-4 years in two large raised beds, but I need to go out and buy more for next year.

Thanks. I might look into that option

you can buy more old fashioned rectangular bales too which are smaller, they had them in fingal farm supplies near oldtown last time i was there. they'd fit in a car, though a bit messy.
