Alcohol in airports and on planes

Should alcohol be banned from airports and air travel completely going forward ?

This comes as a Southwest fight attended was attacked recently by an intoxicated passenger, as a result Southwest and American airlines have stopped serving alcohol on flights until further notice.

Personally I agree with the move, it's an airplane, not a residents bar, it's purpose is transport, not to end up tipsy or more. Personally I'd be a fan of banning it across the airport too, I personally cannot see the fascination of going to Dublin airport at 5am to start the day in the bar downing drinks while waiting for a flight, that always shocked me anytime I flew out of there early on.

There have also ofcourse been many cases over the years of unruly passengers on flights who had been drinking, RYANAIR having trouble with them and stopping alcohol service too for safety reasons, as have aer lingus and others.
It always pissed me off too how the Ryanair gates down in terminal 1 seemed like there was a session always going on, surely this would make other passengers nervous ?

But of course people will say it calms the nerves etc and personally I don't buy it, if that's been scientifically proven then I'd like to see it but it sounds like old man down the pub talk until then.

I'd also say as for people starting their holidays from the airport, great for them but it still shouldn't be an excuse. Many people are flying for different reasons, work, visiting loved ones who may be unwell etc, moving or for other reasons and they might prefer not to put up with drunken carry on behavior.

So what are your opinions ?

Punish the majority because the vast minority do something wrong. Let's stop night time driving because some idiots don't know to turn on their lights when the sun goes down

No harm having a pint before a flight. Airport pints are great craic. Just dont let the lunatic drunks on the flight. Stop trying to ruin it for the rest of us.

Love airport pints, would always head early to have a nice few so would hate to see it banned.

Wouldn't care about a drink on the plane but wouldn't like to see that banned either.

Personal responsibility at the end of the day.

A couple before your holidays is airport law :)

Some people won't be happy until they have last little drop of joy taken away from everyone.

    Lets ban banning things.

I always have a few in the airport regardless of how early or late my flight is, it starts the holiday off.

I don't get plastered nor verbally or physically abuse airline staff or fellow passengers. Don't ruin it for the majority because of a few assholes.

We need to stop using unfair and unintelligent tactics to curb irresponsible drinking and antisocial behaviour. Punishing responsible drinkers isn't the solution and is just lazy and unnecessarily punitive across the board.

Just severely punish those who are the problem instead of taking small pleasures away from everyone including those who are not causing any problems.

Never understood the whole airport pints thing. If you cracked open a can every time you waited at a bus stop, you’d most likely be seen as a degenerate.

No need for it to be banned, though.

There's a fair difference in waiting for the 46A and a flight to the Maldives

It's still making more news over here, airlines talking of joining in with other airlines after they say they've had issues too. American and southwest not showing any sign of letting up.

I dunno, this looks like it could be a new normal coming

Couldnt these same reasons be used to ban alcohol from everywhere?

You know the naswer to this: things don't get banned because of one idiot, and you agree with the stance.

WHy have you not riased the idea of complete prohibition?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

In theory I love the airport pints and have had a fair few

Recent years though I just end up wrecked on landing and makes the waiting around in Airport and any further travel unbearable

Just ban everything to be safe

There's no better pint than the one at 6AM on a Friday morning as you're heading away for the weekend.

The sheer novelty of it. It’s great. They tend to hit me like a sledgehammer if I have a third though.

Ban it, I don’t care about unruly drunkards, it’s the fcukers beer farting on the plane need ejecting.

Yeah, 2 quick ones in the airport and either 1 more on the plane before a nap or if its a shorter flight straight to the nap.

Back in the 90's I'm sure we looked back at the early part of the 20th century (and indeed throughout history) thought, how did such oppressive societies creep in? Surely people would have the knowledge to say no???

And yet here we are in the dawn of the new millennium going right back down the path. Depressing.

Most of these inflight incidents happen in the states - its a lovely combination of prescription drugs (for many many ailments) and alcohol. Its a dangerous mix

You're visiting a loved one who maybe unwell? So EFFING what? Does the reason for your journey determine whether other passengers have a gin & tonic?

I've travelled for many different reasons over the years. On one occasion was to fly from New York to London because my father suffered a heart attack. A few months later I had to make the same journey because he died. So I wasn't in the best of moods on the plane. Others around me were having a lovely time. Chatting, listening to music, playing cards, having a few drinks, etc. Do you think I was going to stand up and say "Listen up, damn you. My father is dead so have some respect and stop enjoying yourselves!" ?

And a train and a ferry are also modes of transport. You want to ban serving of alcohol on these as well?

As long as the pilot isn't drinking before or during the flight it's grand.
