Roof treatment

Hello all,


Any advice of treating/painting my roof? Previous owner had repair work done and the mismatching slates are an eyesore. Was thinking of power washing and then painting the whole lot black. Any thoughts?


It's a bungalow and I have roof ladders and a small scaffold platform so I think safety concerns are covered.

An alternative is to do the opposite; treating the new section of roof with nutrient should encourage the growth of moss and lichen to match the old section of roof. The nutrient could be skimmed milk/yogurt (natural not fruit), liquid tomato fertilizer or liquid cow manure. The liquid cow manure option is cheap but may turn the whole roof brown for a short period of time and have a rather strong smell. The application should be sufficient to cover the roof but not congeal in the joints and interlocks where it may do more harm than good.

That's not something I ever considered but thanks. Pretty left-field thinking!

I'm still leaning towards having the entire roof looking almost like new though. I know there are contractors that will clean, paint and treat your roof but I'm pretty sure it's mega money. I'm thinking that, once I can handle the safety aspect, then it's just washing and painting - how hard can it be...?

I'm very against painting roof at all. Because I've never seen one that doesn't look painted. And you are introducing new unneeded difficult maintenance to the property forever more. Paint needs to be topped up.


I'd advocate just cleaning the older tiles and let the new ones just age. No one's looking at your roof, it's not an eyesore it's the valley too which is even less noticeable.

The texture of the older slates means there will always be a considerable difference no matter what you do. Had you planned to paint the entire roof front and back or just the area in photo. Is it possible to do a sample maybe, power wash first and see how it dries up ? Just not convinced about how a painted roof will perform over time.

i would move the new slates to the back of the house, so the front is uniform instead of painting. Personally I would leave them alone, as suggested by others.

Thanks all. It's not just this valley at the front of the house, there are patches of new slates elsewhere front and back. The reason I was even consdering this was to freshen the whole place up, combined with painting the house itself. I might do a test around the back and see how it turns out. Cheers.

Just step back and think of the LCCA on the carbon footprint of what you are contemplating.
