MOT vs CVRT

A couple of questions here for you learned folks...

1 - How does the CVRT/DOE test compare with the UK's MOT test? Is one more rigourous than another?

Granted one checks cars, for the most part, and one checks commercial vehicles, for the most part but there is some crossover like campers, some small vans etc.

This also leads me onto the second question.

2 - How come the CVRT is done in regular garages, like the MOT test? Why was the NCT test not set up in designated, approved, garages like the CVRT and MOT?

    Thanks all!

    Can't answer the 1st question.

The NCT was setup with designated centres due to corruption in the MOT, the place that is testing also fixes so open to spurious fails or letting unroadworthy cars out, and later even worse was discovered in our DOE, influence from big customers letting death traps on the road. The new CVRT is being done in designated centres now similar to the NCT and even Northern Ireland does it's MOT in designated centres.

The cvrt hasn't been done by regular garages in years, so much the better too. It was a shocking system as was said earlier, death traps being driven around.

Ah ok, I thought CVRT was done in "normal" garages but they were inspected a lot. My mistake.

    Thanks for the replies folks.

The MOT covers commercial vehicles also, but only certain test centres are set up to handle HGVs. I never had to do an MOT so can't comment as to the differences.

The testing manuals for all of them are easily got online if you want to compare.

The CVRT is carried out by VTN, they are normally associated with an existing garage site historically but are separate.

    http://www.vtn.ie/

The VTN is the Vehicle Testers Network; it is a network of test centres appointed in each County by the relevant Local Authority and is regulated by The Road Safety Authority. It is mandatory for Commercials vehicles to be tested yearly. There are two classifications of vehicles Light Goods Vehicle – up to 3500 kg’s (gross vehicle weight) and Heavy Goods Vehicle – 3501 kg’s (gross vehicle weight and over). The purpose of the network is to provide a strong and vibrant network of test centres which are required to operate to the highest international standards.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

There are still some places that are both test centres and mechanics but some are.just test centres.

Hard.to know which is better, I've had lots of BS findings on CVRT where tester was too lazy to ask me a question while I'm waiting or where they've flagged things up as issues, which a mechanic has disagreed with.

I'd be happy having the same place rectify the issues they find, once they can show me what's wrong first.
