Notifications issue

    I have a few apps that i want to receive notifications for, at least getting the visual app icon and a little bit of information.
    Such as YouTube subscriptions.
    However today i find i see the notifications when my screen is locked.
    But when i unlock the device they all disappear and I have no idea what they were.
    Ideally I'd like to swipe down and see notifications.
    What sort of setting is that, and is that app by app settting?
