    Today I received a mail and text from eir indicating the the monthly price for the service is increasing from e6 to e10. I think this is very poor from eir especially this week when the service has been intermittent.

    Does anyone have advice on moving all mails to another service and redirecting anyone who uses my eir address to a new address?

    Just change all your online accounts using the email to a new email address and let everyone on your personal side know

    No other way around it

    If using gmail then easy way to import all your emails

    Set up a gmail account and set up an auto-forward rule and an auto-reply rule on your Eir account, then start changing all your accounts to the new address, starting with bill-related emails. Email all your contacts to notify of the change of email address and keep running your Eir account until you are happy most emails are redirected

    Got the same from eir about their increased webmail cost. Considering the amount of spam that comes through it they have some neck lookingto increase the cost.
    No sign of contact details either if you want to query the increase or discus an issue. If anyone has a number or email for their webmail team let me know please. Preferably a number that doesnt require making 10 phone calls and being on hold for hours.
    Some shower.

    They don't want to support their webmail. Back in the day, it wasn't easy to get an email address - Eir used it as a perk to sell dialup services. Then Hotmail came along and many others followed and theur webmail has been dying since. However there are a cohort of people who are too afraid to switch because frankly, migrating to a new email account is a pain, even if you are tech savvy. Eir killed most of their accounts after the charge came in, they have the remainder by the short and curlies. A tenner is riduculous complared to what Google and other offer for free.

    Now you are really going back!

    But back in the day would have been back in the days of Ireland On-Line back in 1993 and it certainly wasn't cheap for email!
    555293.png

    Eir or Eircom didn't exist back then and Tinet (Telecom Eireann Internet) didn't come about until 1997, by then both Ireland On-Line (1993) and Indigo (1996) already existed in Ireland so Telecom Eireann was sort of late to the party.
    Then Hotmail came along and many others followed and their webmail has been dying since.

    Hotmail actually started before Tinet,
    Hotmail was started back in 1996 (I know because I had an account), Tinet didn't start till 1997 :pac:

    Off hand I think RocketMail may have been before hotmail, but like Geocities they got bought up by Yahoo who ruined the service.
    A tenner is riduculous complared to what Google and other offer for free.

    10e a year is expensive and frankly nobody should use any @gmail, @hotmail email address. Instead people should buy their own domain name and this will allow them to change email providers as much as they wish without it ever changing their email address.
    90e will buy you a .com domain name for 10 years from the likes of Black Knight so its good value for money!

    E-Mail providers can always go bye bye, no matter how big they may seem!

    I had a number of accounts over the years from big company's including Netscape and over time the services got shut.

    For anyone interested I've included a com's below from Ireland On-Line back in June 1993, it's part of Irish internet history really
    About Ireland On-Line
    =====================

    Ireland On-Line specialises in computer-based communications, offering
    international E- Mail, Conferencing, On-line Sales and Support, and a
    library of Shareware and Public Domain Software, as well as a full sales
    and consultancy service covering all aspects of computer-based
    communications.

    Our aim is to provide economical and efficient communications to
    businesses and individuals throughout Ireland, bringing the benefits of
    the latest in communications technology to all. Whether you are a
    student needing access to research materials, or a large company needing
    a communications link to trading partners at home and abroad, we are
    sure to have a package to suit you.

    Future plans include on-line News Wires, remote login access to
    thousands of computer systems located in Universities and Research
    Institutes World- wide, On-line Databases providing valuable information
    of relevance to Irish business and much more. We are able to offer a
    complete host service to companies/organisations wishing to offer an
    on-line service, with a minimum of development and running costs, from a
    single conference area on our BBS to a full-blown on-line system with
    its own range of databases, conferences, file areas, charging
    structures, etc.

    We have plans to introduce local dial-up access in Dublin (4 lines
    opening in July '93) as well as Galway, with further access being
    considered for other major population areas, as well as Northern
    Ireland, making Ireland On-Line a truly Nation-wide service.

    The BBS
    ~~~~~~~
    Ireland On-Line's Bulletin Board System, accessible 24 hours a day using
    a computer and modem. The BBS is aimed at both the small business and
    recreational user, being inexpensive to access, yet with a huge array of
    features and services tailored to reflect the needs and interests of
    Irish users. With subscription charges starting at as little as .25.00
    per year, and no time-based charges, Ireland On-Line offers a wealth of
    information and fun for no more than the cost of a magazine
    subscription.
    If you would like to be able to send/ receive E-Mail to all major
    networks in the World, our GOLD supscription includes Internet E-Mail,
    with the connectivity being on a par with even the biggest and most
    expensive e-mail services such as Compu$erve, AT&T and MCI Mail but
    offering V32bis 14,400 (and ZyXEL 19,200) on all lines.
    The BBS is a social system, where people can gather and discuss topics
    of mutual interest with others of a like inclination the World over. The
    user interface is extremely friendly, and the tone is relaxed, making
    you feel welcome and at home, and opening up a huge new world of
    knowledge and social contacts.
    A number of special software packages have been developed especially for
    using this system, available for PCs, Macintosh, Unix and Amiga,
    designed to enhance the usefulness of the system while at the same time
    minimising your telephone costs by keeping on-line time to a minimum.
    How Does a Bulletin Board Work?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    A bulletin board system (BBS) is a computer connected to the telephone
    system and carrying a number of "conferences" or areas where people chat
    and exchange ideas, information, computer programs etc. To access a
    bulletin board you must have a computer and a modem, you then dial the
    telephone number of the BBS, enter your password, and you are there.

    Once logged on you can join any open conference, or use whatever other
    facil- ities are available (these might include on-line games, magazines,
    sales facilities, E- mail).

    Conferences - the Heart of a BBS
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Conferences on a BBS generally cover a specific topic (i.e. a specific
    piece of software or hardware, religion, politics, professions, etc.),
    and a BBS may have hundreds of such conferences. There are also a number
    of international conference networks where messages are relayed daily
    around the world. In these conferences you can communicate with others
    the world over. For instance, if you are having difficulty with a Lotus
    123 macro routine and you put up a message in the "Lotus" conference
    explaining your difficulty, you might as easily get an answer from
    someone in New York or Paris as Galway. In many cases you might get an
    answer from the author himself!
    Some of the conferences we are carrying include: Amiga, Macintosh, Dos,
    Atari, Music, Lotus, Windows, Wordperfect and Spreadsheets to name but a
    few. If anyone has a specific conference they would like included we can
    either add it from the international networks or start our own. We have
    recently been successful in having our very own RIME conference, simply
    called IRELAND established, through which people from all over the world
    are able to get directly in touch with people and businesses in Ireland.
    Software
    ~~~~~~~~
    As well as conferences, there are thousands of shareware and public
    domain software programs which can be downloaded (i.e. copied from the
    BBS to your own computer) and used immediately. Public Domain means that
    the author has made a program available to all for no charge, and you
    are free to use it and pass it to others, while Shareware is not free
    software, but you are given an opportunity to try it out before paying
    for it. These programs always come with manuals in a text file, and the
    cost of registering them is usually low (.7.00 - .40.00) because no
    money is wasted on packaging, distribution or dealer mark-ups. There are
    thousands of these programs available, many equally as good as any
    commercial package costing ten times as much.

    Games On-Line - Join in the Fun!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    We also have a large number of on-line games such as Chess, Tradewars
    and Backgammon. Most of the games are set up so that you are playing
    against other people on-line, and are a lot of fun (addictive even).We
    will continue to add the latest and greatest in On-line Entertainment
    for your enjoyment.
    As well as the above, there are a number of electronic publications
    which are available to either read on-line or download to your own
    computer. These include NewsBytes, bringing up-to-the-minute news on the
    computer industry every week, and Poetry in Motion, an international
    poetry magazine published monthly, as well as numerous other specialist
    publications.
    This is a brief outline of some of the facilities Ireland On-Line has to
    offer, however we have many plans to introduce other interesting and
    useful features as time goes on. The capacity exists also for companies,
    clubs or individuals to form there own conferences, either public or
    private, for customer support, information exchange or whatever. At the
    end of the day it is the users who will determine what shape it takes.
    E-MAIL - THE FUTURE OF COMMUNICATIONS - NOW!
    =============================================
    What is E-Mail?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Electronic Mail, or E-Mail, is the ultimate information delivery system,
    and before very long it will replace the Postal service as the method of
    transport for everything but actual goods. Anything that can be stored
    in electronic form can be sent via e-mail. This includes text, pictures,
    video, software....information of all types. And E-Mail is FAST. Once
    entered into the system, e-mail is delivered virtually anywhere in the
    world in a matter of minutes - sometimes seconds.

    In the not-to-distant future, all homes will be equipped with e-mail
    facilities. Imagine a letter from a relative overseas. you might receive
    a letter (written 2 weeks previously) telling you of the arrival of a
    new baby, describing its looks, etc. With e-mail you could receive the
    same information, but not only would it be just a few minutes old, but
    instead of simply describing the child, the "letter" could contain
    actual video footage! This is not the stuff of fantasy, it is real, and
    only around the corner.

    Getting Connected
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Through our international connections we are able to offer full
    international E-Mail services to our customers, from the individual to
    the largest company.
    For the small business, E-Mail access through our BBS might be
    sufficient, but if your requirements involve large volumes of mail or
    having multiple mail addresses - for instance to connect your in-house
    E-Mail system running on a local area network to the outside world -
    then a UUCP connection is the best solution.
    We can provide you with a company e-mail address so that your personnel
    can send and receive mail directly from their workstations. In a
    situation where three or more people at the same location need E-Mail
    facilities this can be a more economical approach, as the charges for a
    site feed are independent of the number of mailboxes at that site. We
    can provide software to handle all aspects of mail management for
    systems running under Dos, Unix and Macintosh, either networked or
    stand-alone. The UUCP connection can be set up to transfer mail with
    whatever frequency is required, ensuring that your e- mail reaches its
    destination with a minimum of delay.
    UseNet News - The Largest Conference Room on Earth
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    UseNet is a set of machines that exchange articles tagged with one or
    more universally recognised labels, called newsgroups (or "groups" for
    short) these newsgroups are very similar to the conferences on Galway
    On-Line (indeed they will also be available there). The articles consist
    of discussions and files on a vast array of topics. It is the biggest
    bulletin board in the World, with an estimated 2,000,000 readers at
    40,000 sites world- wide.

    UseNet encompasses government agencies, large universities, schools,
    businesses of all sizes, as well as home computers. It is a unique
    source of research and current event information.

    Ireland On-Line will offer access to the full range of UseNet
    Newsgroups, available both on Ireland On-Line, or via UUCP for feeding
    directly into businesses and other organisations.

    On-Line Databases
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    We have currently in development a database system specifically designed
    for use as an on-line database server. This system will allow many
    different ways to retrieve data, including direct on-line querying, and
    even the ability to send e-mail from any location in the world and
    request data remotely. The requested information will then be e-mailed
    straight back with no further user intervention. This is an extremely
    powerful system with many possible applications which would be of great
    benefit to Irish businesses, allowing prospective customers the world
    over to request details of products, prices, etc., with an ease and
    speed not available by other means.
    We will be offering Irish business and organisations the opportunity to
    avail of this system at a very reasonable charge, and working with them
    to ensure that we in Ireland can benefit as much as possible from the
    possibilities this communication revolution has to offer.
    E-mail and UseNet news can be accessed on our Bulletin Board System.
    BBS access is very suitable for individuals and small companies whose
    needs do not justify a full feed, yet who would like to enjoy the
    mail-handling ability.
    Special Group Rates can be arranged for colleges, clubs and organisations
    wishing to arrange access for individual members, details
    INTERNET SERVICES
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Beginning in Autumn 1993 we will be offering full IP connections to the
    Internet, using either dial-up SLIP/PPP or permenant leased line
    connection, allowing you to directly attach your machine or LAN to the
    world-wide Internet, giving you access to the largest computer network
    on earth.

    We are also able to offer services tailored to your requirments, such as
    connecting corporate networks with LANs located in different places
    either within Ireland or throughout the world, either permenantly (with
    a leased line) or on an intermittant (dial-up) basis.

    We will continue to develop further services, and if you have a
    connectivity or data transfer need, we will work with you in developing
    a cost-effective and efficient solution.

    OUR POLICY
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    We reserve the right to ammend pricing and facilities from time to time.
    All facilities are provided on the basis that Ireland On-Line will do
    Hotmail was started back in 1996 (I know because I had an account)
    Me too - still use it as a backup account. Only 6 letters before the @ :)
    I had one too from 96 until I didn't log in for a while and Microsoft deleted everything. Still have sunbeamlastname@yahoo.com. I was just too late to get the dot between first name and last name.
    *Heads off to check that it is still active*
    They (Microsoft) don't seem to nuke accounts for inactivity if you have ever tied it to any other service, e.g Skype. Logged in to mine for the first time in years and its still there, including some rather old emails.
    I still have my rocketmail address (and the firstname.lastname@yahoo.com to the same mailbox from when they were bought out) delivering emails to the Gmail app on my phone. I have the Hotmail address I set up kits for using MSN.
    The spam filter works overtime on an address that's been on the go since about 1995...
    Is eir webmail down again €10 a month for a **** service
  • Registered Users Posts: 321 ✭✭Fishdoodle
    Had a similar problem!
    I'd pay for one month ... have your mail forwarded to a different 'new account'.
    On your new account create a signature for all outgoing mail which will state that this email is your new one and that by Oct 30 you will no longer be using Eir due to costs.
    So - when you respond to messages - your contacts will reply via your new address. - The signature prompt will hopefully have them change your contact details. They can still reply via eir webmail if they wish to verify that you're for real.
    Any Utility service using your eir webmail .... log in to each of them and change them ... one by one.
    By the end of the month you should be getting less and less in your eir webmail. Any contacts still using it newr the end of the month ...send them a message. By November ...you should be good to move on. :-)
    It's a bit of hassle ...but you'll be glad you did it :-)
    I used to have a bigfoot.com email address. You could use it to redirect email to any other email address so if you changed your primary email address you could change it on the bigfoot site to use the new address.
