Achill at October Mid-Term

We have finally decided not to try to go abroad in 2021. We are tied to School Holidays so are looking at doing something at October Mid-Term.
Have seen a suitable reasonable Airbnb on Achill. But unsure about the weather. We like outdoors (hiking, watersports) and are not afraid of rain etc but just wondering if activities would still be open at this time of year and also restaurants/take aways etc

None of us have ever been. Was recommended by friends but they previously went June BH.

    TIA

Why don’t you give the companies a call and check? Many of them operate ‘seasonal’ schedules but with Sept often being our summer wearherwise and Oct having a b/hol /midterm they might well extend their season.

We spent a lot of summers many moons ago over there - my abiding memory is being let roam wild and two extremes - endless sun or endless driving rain. Wellies and oilskins a must I’d say.

Does the house have (good) wifi?
After the year we’ve had you’d really want to be onboard with the risk of every day being really bad & getting very wet to risk it.

Didn’t that Donegal postman make great predictions for this year thou? He was in the news this morning!!

Takeaways will be open Fri-Sun, hotel just before the bridge (Ostan Oilean Acla) is open all year round and does good food, Ametyst and Pure Magic should be open too for food. Most of the pubs will be open during the week and should be able to hire surfboards and kayaks at Keel beach pretty much all year round, Surf Le Tomas supplies them, might also be able to Kitesurf and do other watersports on the lake too. No shortage of good hikes around on the island and in the Currane Penninsula. Supervalu just as you cross the bridge if you plan to rent a house. Cycle along the Atlantic Drive or from Mulranny-Currane-Achill Sound is nice on a good day but weather very hit and miss that time of year.

That all sounds great but the "weather very hit and miss that time of year" is really what is giving us pause I guess. Don't mind drizzle etc but obviously not a full week of it. Wondering whether to take the chance or just save our money for 2022 ?

A quick google of Achill, weather october gives the following description:-

Average Weather During October In Achill Sound (Mayo), Ireland
The average minimum temperature (usually the minimum temperature is noted during the night) in Achill Sound in October is 8.0°C (46.4°F). The amount of rain in October is high with an average of 134mm (5.3in). October is the most wet month of the year. The average maximum temperature lies around 13.0°C (55.4°F). With a water temperature of around 13.0°C (55.4°F), this is not the best month to swim. In this month you will hardly see any sunshine with 82 hours of sun during the whole month.

    Not very promising!!!!!!

The current LTA for the majority of stations in Mayo would have October as being in the top 3 wettest months of the year with an average temperature of around 10-11C

It's probably worth chancing for a long weekend that time of year but maybe not the entire week. Surely get one day for hiking/walks and can do surfing pretty much any day as long as it's not blowing a gale, if it pisses down you can always head to the pub I guess

All very pessimistic here. October has seen some great weather in Mayo in recent years and would usually be as good a bet as May/June for a bit of sunshine

Husband thinks that unpredictable weather will be a risk anywhere in Ireland at that time of year so it might as well be Achill as anywhere else.
