    Depends how you define stupid

Everybody is stupid, some of us less than others, then there are the people who need the do not drink sign on the back of a bottle of bleach.

In my experience, anyone who consciously thinks they are stupid is most likely to be far more intelligent than anyone who makes a big thing about how intelligent/"intellectual" they are.

It's really fascinating watching utter morons talk complete bollocks about stuff like COVID19 with supreme confidence in their own Facebook-derived expertise, while highly trained medics are still reading meticulous research and figuring it all out.

Ever read the story about Boris Johnson thinking he was going to take a musician's trophy off him the the following year as he was irked by the champion's consecutive wins of the 'best pianist' title at Eton? Bojo thought a year of tinkling on a piano, in his spare time from being a buffoon, was going to be enough for him to become a philharmonic célèbre.

It does make one wonder how thick one is in one's own life.

I think some people mistake overall intelligence with being good at a particular thing. It's very prevalent on this site tbh. Someone who might be good at patching servers or teaching French believes that makes them an authority on almost everything else. Therefore you have lots of armchair experts on vaccination rollouts, analysing complex patterns of disease infection, cybersecurity, how to run a nation state etc. These people aren't necessarily stupid, but they aren't particularly intelligent either.

Depends on how you define intelligence. Lots of different types.Would be quite good academically in a lot of areas. Will wipe the floor with most people in quizzes etc. Very good at aptitude tests and the couple of IQ tests i've done.

On the other hand I can be quite ditzy and can lack focus. I'm ok at practical intelligence.

Practical intelligence is underrated, my father left school at 14 but could build a house from the ground up, for me that's impressive.

When pubs reopen you'll find them on a barstool in your pub. They can run professional football teams too, you left that out :pac:

It's funny, I've been thinking about how stupid I am lately.

Indeed it should. You seem to have taken as fact a story that reeks of nonsense.

Boris Johnson does not strike me as unintelligent, though I'm sure someone will provide an example of him doing something stupid and fail to see the irony and self-pwn.

Yup the same experts who a year later into a pandemic decided to quarantine people coming into the country when vaccines are rolling out.

I wear glasses, so everyone assumes I’m intelligent. It’s actually got me quite far in life.

He is like Prince Harry. Playing the jester.

It depends on your definition of intelligence. Is it a global average of all different types of intelligence or comparative?

I'm terrible at maths and struggle to get my head around the why in scientific matters. My inter-personal intelligence isn't the best. I can't put my figure on it but people tend to irritate me quite easily and I don't pick up on people's motives as others seem to. I like music and sports and can pick up on certain things but my body isn't at the same level.

On the other hand, I do well with languages and seem to absorb a great amount of useless general knowledge and I seem to have better concept of time passing and orientation than a lot of people I know.

I know plenty of people who make me feel stupid, not in a nasty way, just by effortlessly demonstrating some intelligence that is far beyond my own capabilities. I do feel that I'm 'smart' but I'm well aware of certain aspects where I'm lacking.

There's a youtube video of a debate between Mary Beard and Boris Johnson on the topic of Ancient Greece and Rome.

Boris is obviously not in her league in such a debate, but nonetheless, he holds his own and from reading the comments you can see that a majority of the viewers agree on this fact, many stating that he would have made a great history professor!

That skill in itself, the art of spoofing and bluffing your way into all sorts of places where you are well out of your depth and making a good fist of it, must be a sign of supreme intelligence of a sort.

I thought I knew a great deal when I was a teenager but the older I get the more I realize just how far from the truth that is. I'm not especially clever, but I'm always willing to learn.

    Pretty stupid, yeah.

Last week I found out what the two buttons on a toilet mean, press one for a wee; both for a poo.

I have basic skills of comprehension, I know a little history, but I thought it was funny that this basic knowledge eluded me. Never fool yourself into believing you are a genius. We are all, in our own ways, idiots.

Johnson wanted herd immunity without vaccines last year. That seems to have been forgotten.

If I remember correctly that was the thinking of the chief UK government scientist at the time also.

I'm not about to defend Boris, but he did have scientific backing at the time. Obviously quickly evaporated.

Now there was a reason that I hated Forest Gump, what was it again? Also Star Wars the Phantom Menace where a new character, Jar Jar Binks appeared. Why don't I like these characters.

    Let me think. ;)

While I see the appeal of such a counterintuitive belief, my own experience suggests that the self-consciously intellectual are indeed more intelligent than the self-consciously stupid.

Small gene pool? They still do ok. Maybe British public is stupid or naive.
