Welding for the NCT

What do NCT inspectors look at where welding on a car's floor is concerned? I've been doing a bit on my Yaris and the welds have good penetration but are a bit agricultural looking and I'm wondering if the NCT will want something neat.

Any pics? If a weld looks bad it is bad generally

I'm going to grind back the one facing out and re-do it.

Grind/ wire brush off all the flux (looks like its not a gas welder) and see what you have, some areas do need redoing for sure

You need to grind back all the surfaces to bare metal or you won't get a good weld.

My mechanic reckons the rat sh!t look is good for passing the NCT.

He claims he's had fails on really good tidy welding thats been ground back because the tester can't see the weld?

Maybe a story to save him doing a tidy job but he is a good welder, tends to be believable and the welding he's done for me has always passed.

Wake me up when it's all over.

I had them ground back with a die grinder, I could probably have gone further out but I was afraid of clipping the spring seat with the grinder.

My nice neat weld failed nct because they put light coat of primer on it and NCT couldn't see the weld.

Appealed the decision as i didn't want to drive in the winter with bare metal welds. Manager put a magnet to it saying he thought it was cardboard - magnet stuck and he looked embarrassed - still failed as he said he had to back up his workers!
(Nct on M50 at Airport) :(

Eventually went to a different nct center and they said was a good job and passed.

    “Roll it back”

I ground it back and went over a few parts and it passed the test no bother.
