Log Cabins - Are They Longlasting

We’re looking to build a 4 bed house but don’t have a hope of getting a mortgage plus I don’t want to have such a big mortgage either. Visited a cabin yesterday that was built by -snip- .

Does anyone have any experience with them? It was a 3 bed cabin with open plan living room/kitchen and finally a bathroom. I was mighty impressed with it. Total cost of about €60k but owners did an awful lot of work themselves. That was materials, electrical, plumbing, insulation, foundations, furniture and I assume planning costs.

If anyone else has taken this route could you give feedback on your experience. I had been looking at modularhomesireland.ie but they are a different kettle of fish and a big step up in price but my understanding is their product differentiation is a fully kitted out house - wired, plumbed & ready to move into in 3 weeks whereas Cabins4u is just the skeleton frame and we’d need to sort the rest.

Have you checked the one you looked at on the relevant planning website to see what their planning is for?

Also, the €60k log cabin will need double that put into it to comply with regulations so did you ask what’s missing and what you would have to do.

You also have to make sure the planners will be happy with the “log cabin” look but it will have some construction system internally to achieve regulations.
