SIRO/Vodafone ONT management IP

    Hi guys,

I got SIRO installed in my new house. I do remember that it's possible to log in directly into ONT (the small Huawei HG8010 box which terminates GPON) with root:admin credentials, but I can't remember management IP and it is not printed on the ONT (according to the manual it has to, but it's not there).

I remember that there were some very useful stats on link quality.

Could you please remind me what the management IP should be? I think it had to be 192.168.100.1 but seems like I mixing it up with some other device.

    Thanks!

Actually I've checked my records and yes, the management IP had to be 192.168.100.1

Seems like Vodafone turned the management interface off.

Well, had a call with Vodafone tech support. They say that each time the ONT connects to the optical network they push a configuration update which disables access to the management interface. They say it's for secutiry reasons, blah-blah. That's a bit stupid because the link stats is really useful.

Actually I was able to confirm that by factory-resetting the device while disconnected from fiber. In this case I can get into the management interface.

I'm wondering if it's possible to replace it with a custom ONT, e.g. UFiber Nano G from Ubiquity. At least that box can terminate PPPoE, so there would be no need in damn gigabox.

    Another ONT thread!
Most providers won't give you access.

Worked without an issue on another vodafone/siro setup at another address.

For some reason they started limiting the access but I doubt it makes any sense, eh.

    No, you cannot change ONT.

You probably could put a switch in between the VF unit and the ONT. I guess they may just be deleting the route for that subnet so your traffic doesn't reach the ONT.

Could you elaborate why you think so? I'm not an expert in OLT/ONTs though there are some generic gpon devices compatible with huawei OLTs and there are enough success reports from other eu countries. E.g. I've found some people on vodafone Spain who replaced their huawei ONTs with some other devices and are very happy about that.

The terminal authenticates at OLT with serial number and unique key. I know them both. These huawei ONTs support serial number change, so do generic devices.

The only reason for that may be some kind of an proactive prevention from OLT itself. It's possible but I have no idea why may they want to do so. By definition ONT is a passive device which cannot interfere/break network anyhow.

Why do you think I'm using gigabox at all ? :D Any pppoe-capable box works.

Oh, I did some experiments. Including passive wiresharking and arp tables play.
They definitely block management interface on ont level immediately after/during gpon handshake.

    Use the search function please.

It's not like there are many posts on this subject. Well, I've found a couple of posts "no, you can't do it", though there is no any explanation.

    Well, JFYI.

It's defintely possible to use custom ONT on SIRO. A friend of mine tried UFiber Nano G with Huawei compatibility profile and, surprisingly, it worked like a charm (a couple of settings needs to be done but that's easy).

Though there are very few benefits. You can see link quality stats. There are less speed variations (when you run iperf/speedtest it shows constant speed with very little jitter, on Huawei the jitter is about 1-3 mbps). However the throughput was a bit (~20Mbps) less than on huawei. UFiber can terminate PPPoE but it does not support DMZ/port mapping (supports UPNP though). So, such setup may be beneficial for a person with simple network topology (a switch can be connected directly to ONT without gigabox) but is not associated with any breakthrough improvements.

So, I'm not interested in such setup anymore and going to stick with my bulky but more or less well working setup: standard SIRO terminal connected to EdgeRouter 4 for PPPoE termination which, in turn, is connected to UDMP and implements full NAT. I had to make some quirky things on the UDMP in order to get UPNP working properly. And now I have (almost) the full speed (989mbps on PHY of the edgerouter, 940 on machines inside my network) and double nat which does not create any troubles.
