Ryanair - Expired Gift Card

Apologies if this has been asked before.

I received a Ryanair gift card in December 2019 with and expiry date of December 2020, I used this for a flight in July 2020 that was subsequently cancelled and the email I received from Ryanair stated "We confirm that your refund request has been processed. As your booking reference was paid with a gift voucher, this voucher is now available to be redeemed again."

As we were not able to travel I thought nothing of it at the time and presumed the voucher was valid for at least a full year from this date.

I tried to use it this week and have been told the the voucher expired so I contacted customer support and this is their response:

"Please be advised that gift vouchers are non-refundable or extendable, and if not used until the expiry date, the amount on the voucher is lost."

Surly Ryanair cannot be getting away with this when the voucher expired in the middle of the pandemic with no end in sight....

The thing is, you used your gift card before the expiry date. They then cancelled your flight, so the replacement gift card should start from the date of the cancelled flight not the original date. So your replacement card should expire in July 2021.

However in December 2019 new rules were brought in regarding the length of time Gift Cards were to be valid. The new term is 5 years. Ryanair are being smart in not calling your replacement card a NEW card. It is in fact a NEW card because you had used your old card when you purchased a flight. These should have a 5 year life span.

Complain to the CCPC Ireland. Make sure to tell them that it was a GIFT card and not a cancelled flight refund voucher. These boys will try and fob you off to the the Aviation for Regulation.....however, they are supposed to deal with GIFT cards. Just be warned, I have found them utterly useless....
