I've read that if you are on Disability Allowance you need to inform the Department of Social Protection if you are leaving the state. Does that mean that you need to inform them if you are going to Newry for a few hours shopping?

Yes and you must provide detailed receipts of everything you bought while there.

No I think it means if you wish to relocate your accommodation to somewhere else in the world you have to tell them. So hypothetically, you cant relocate to Bulgaria where your Euro goes four times further and having your Disability, fuel allowance and whatever being paid into your Irish bank account. I wish I could do that.

Sure have a day out run up to Newry and check out the bargains in Sainsbury and Tesco for cheap drink. If you are going clothes shopping try Banbridge outlet.

Perhaps a bit of tongue and cheek post OP? :)

No, you don't need to inform anyone if your going shopping up north or dubai for that matter, indeed no requirement if your going on vacation to the Bahamas, albeit not likely with travel restrictions for a while.

You do however have to inform the department of a change of address and relocation to another state full time, in that case, lots to consider but that's for another day. Enjoy your shopping :)

A few hours in Newry don't need any information to the department.
But if you want to go on a holiday abroad, you need to inform the DoSP before you go.
