Passive HDMI Splitter problems

This splitter has the limitation that only one of the connected devices can be live at any time. So far so good, fine for my use.
Problem is that if I have TV live on one outlet and connect an unconnected cable to the other output it cuts the picture on the TV.

Can this be due to HDMI cable wirings or is anyone using one of these passive splitters with success?
