Lanzarote

Hi everyone,

I'm gonna be in Lanzarote for a week on my own and I'd appreciate some advise on:

- Restaurants in Puerto del Carmen
- Beaches outside of Puerto del Carmen (I'm renting a car so expect I'll be able to visit a fair bit, wouldn't like to stay just by the hotel)
- Locals, I speak the language and would like to interact with the locals. What are they like? Are they friendly?

Advice on anything other than what I've listed is also welcome.

Three restaurants I could recommend on the PDC main strip are;
Mojitos for steak, Tex Mex.
Maritonis, family run Spanish, fish stews, tapas.
Go chow Mein, great chineese, gyozas, noodles, aromatic duck pancakes, good value.

If you have a car, try the beach at caleton Blanco it's on the north of the island near Orizola. To
Head to the Mirador de Rio for a fabulous view and a coffee.

For beaches :-
Playa Flamingo in Playa Blanca is calm, sheltered and backed by some bars & restaurants.
The beaches of Papagayo are stunning but the road to it ( used to be €3 for non-residents to enter the reserve ) was loose gravel and I think the car hire companies considered it off-road so a no no.
Do go to El Golfo if you haven't been to Lanzarote. (Not for swimming/sunbathing) but one of the island's natural wonders.
Caleton Blanca on the way to Orzola is also lovely.
Arrieta beach also on the way to Orzola is worth a look and there are a few traditional eating houses/chiringuitos around there.

For restaurants in PdC:-
Tex Mex - Cantina Don Rafael ( Also do great salads for lunchtime )
Traditional + steaks - + 1 for Maritoni
also Playa Mar
and Terraza Playa
Tapas - Vino +
Taberna de Nino
Italian -
Sorrento de Italia
Also Casa del Parmigiano

Everyone is very friendly and if you speak Spanish you'll get on even better still outside the resort areas. The island is small and easy to get around. Do try and see some of the natural wonders. El Golfo as mentioned also :-
Timanfaya national park
Mirador del Rio

The Fundacion Cesar Manrique is well worth a visit. His influence on the island is everywhere from the very logo of the island to the roundabout sculptures to architecture.

The Jardin de Cactus on the way to Orzola/Arrieta is also worth a stop.

I'd reccomend a day trip over to the island of La Graciosa. You get a foot ferry from the north of the island of Lanzarote. Takes under 30 minutes to cross. It's an unspoilt little paradise and chances are you will be the only tourist there

Los lobos is another nice place. If you hike whats Left of the crater it has some unbelievable view's. Ferry from the South of Lanzarote.

+ 1 . Years ago we went there, a bit rough on the headland out from Orzola :eek: but well worth it.

Many years since I was there but Famara was nearest thing to a west of Ireland beach that I remember in Lanzarote

If you like a quiet life away from the crowd take a short drive to Plays Blanca where the crescent shaped beach at Playa
Dorada is heaven to swim in. Have a coffee in the enclosed Palm garden in the Hotel Princesa Yaisa.
