Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Rifle disposal

    Hi.
What steps do I have to take to safely dispose of or recycle a rifle. I've a savage rifle .22 that I bought for my first gun. I've since bought a 17 and a shotgun so its just been taking up space in my gunsafe for the past 3 years as I never use it. The renewal is early next month so I'm thinking I need to get rid as its not worth a lot.

I mailed the local gun range where I bought it to see if they would like it for free but they never got back to me. Its a semi-auto and the gun fires fine but the renewals over the past 3 years are probably worth more than the gun so as I'm struggling to even give it away I'm thinking I might dispose of it (if there is a legal way). Plus the 3 guns and scopes are a bit of a squeeze in the safe so overall I could do with the space.

    Thanks

Easiest option is to "sell" it to your local RFD (he/she may not given you anything for it, but they might give you a few quid for it)
It might suit someone new starting in the sport.

If not, the RFD can destroy it

One way or another, you need to get it out of your name.

Your RFD will take it to destroy it, probably charge a small fee as it has to be chopped up with a Garda there to witness it.

Why not put it in the sales section here? Let it go for small money and get someone started in shooting.

If the gun is in good working order then post it up here in the For Sale section - For Free

You can hang onto it until your license expires and then ask your local gun dealer to hold it for you pending sale. If he charges you a handling fee just ask the prospective buyer to cover the charge. Either that or renew it one more time and proceed as above just looking for the price of your licence back.

It's a same to see a working firearm go under the saw.

If I had more time I would do so. But the renewal is due in 3-4 weeks and Ill have to pay the renewal while their application is pending and I don't want to put anymore money into the gun. And to be honest I don't want the hassle that usually comes with a private sale.

If the RFD can find someone to use it then great. If there is even someone on boards who knows a gun club or RFD who would take it to pass it on to someone else as a first gun I would gladly give it to them. Anywhere in Waterford, Wexford, Wicklow or Dublin I would drive to no hassle.

Ok so, bring the firearm to the dealer and he will give you a receipt for it and decide what he's going to do with it. He may have a FCA2 at hand and he can assist you filling it out.

If not follow the link - https://www.garda.ie/en/search/?q=Firearms++license+&area=%2f&areairl=%2f

Download the Firearms Certificate Amendment / Cancellation Form - FCA2.

Fill in section-2. Cancellation of Firearm Certificate.

On page two (2) Reason for Cancellation of the Firearm Certificate: Tick appropriate boxes as to what will happen to the firearm (Transferred to Dealer: /Destroyed by Dealer) as arranged with the firearms dealer.

Sign and date it then drop it off to your local Garda station.

Walk into any RFD and ask them if they want a free gun, they'll take it off you and give you a letter for proof of sale and you dont ever have to think about it again.
    Job done, 5 mins.

Can't see the point of getting it destroyed.

That's not the way it works!

Ya pay €50 to get it destroyed, rock up a month later and it's on the shelf for €250.

Seems a real shame to be talking about having the gun destroyed - it's got to be worth more then €80 every 3 years, to someone....

    Thanks,

    G.

Swop it for ammunition, that's what I done once with a .22 WMR that I was getting rid of.

    I agree.

In this matter if someone has to pay someone to destroy a gun which is in their name and paid for this service, then there must be some kind of paperwork to clear all parties.

Not doing the job that was paid for and giving documented proof of doing so, is a very stupid thing to do and could lead to all sorts. The very least a bad name.

Without asking for one I got a receipt from Mike Duggan in Killarney when I gave him a rifle to destroy to state exactly that was what was going to happen the rifle.

He charged me 20 euro and showed me the other rifles he had waiting to be destroyed, when he has a good few he chops them up in front of a Garda. There was some nice rifles there but at the time there was no market for them.

Hi op. Im interested in getting a rifle. I might pm you if thays ok?

Seeing as ye are talking about destroying perfectly good rifles. Would it be possible to get a dovetail rail off a rimfire rifle somewhere? I think I might have a job for it.

    Check with your local RFD.

Altough there are bases that offer the user a dove tail option generally the dove tails are machined as an intergal
    part of the receiver.

These guys have a selection of dove tail mounts etc -

Not so much the rail I wanted but the 60° angle. Thanks for the link anyhow. They have a vast range of gear.

Whatever you do with your old rifle, do it correctly within the law, you don't want it to come back and bite you in the rear end.

It is a shame though that so many old servicable firearms end up getting the chop, while there are new homes for lots of them, when the're gone their parts are also gone and lots of folk are always looking for spare parts.

I remember when old PDF .303's were chopped and dumped at sea, the last ones were sold to Canada I think. Shamefull........

Indeed they were, and are enjoying new homes in the US/Canada and getting more valuable by the day. Esp if they are within the so-called "Irish pattern" serial number range. [Google it] Saw one at a gun show in AZ in the mid-90s for 200usd still in its grease wrapper...Wish I had grabbed it now.
